I'm toying with the idea of deep striking my whole army via drop pods and with land speeders deep strike ability. What are the pro's and cons of this?
The hardest thing about this army is that your army can tend to come in as pieces. Especially when you need them the most. But you can place all your units where YOU want them to be. It also puts the drop on your opponent. They won't know what hit them.
and you can split the battlefield the way you like. Your opponent splits his forces in two? No problemo, drop your pods on one side and blast away. Its lots of fun using drop pods
The Drop pods also become instant pieces of terrain which can shield the disembarking troops from fire. You can disembark and move up to 2" as per normal vehicle rules. But as already posted the main drawback is that your army may come on piecemeal.
So while you dismantle his army bit by bit your army isn't being shot to death. Very nice.
If you win for chooing whether or not to go first or second, choose second. Your opponent will probably choose first if he wins anyway.
So, if you go second:
Turn 1: your opponent does nothing, you do nothing.
Turn 2: Your opponent does nothing, but you come in and hurt him in some way.
Turn 3: Your opponent can hurt you, you can hurt him.
Turn 4: Your opponent can hurt you, you can hurt him.
Turn 5: : Your opponent can hurt you, you can hurt him.
Turn 6: : Your opponent can hurt you, you can hurt him.
You may notice that you have 5 turns to hurt your opponent, and he has only 4 turns to hurt you. So you get an extra turn, and you also get the last say of the game. Not to mention that you will always hit him first.
i have tried, its fun, but it didnt work at-all.lol
Your better of plyaing marines normaly, tactical tactical and tactical squads covering ure points cost.
Or Assault marines, i wont go into that
The commandments of the space marines
1) thou shalt not put a 'honk if u think im sexy sticker on the sisters rhino
2)C-3P0 is NOT a necron ambasador
3) thou shalt not ask a banshee, to karaoke
4)thou shalt not ask the inquisition to bring down the exterminatus on you ex-wife
Drop pods can work wonderfully or they can blow up in your face.
You have to have some experiance with them before you can get very good. And most people, even other marine players, tend not to respond very well to a drop pod assault.
Roughly half your army will arrive on turn 2. Most of the rest on turn 3. Remember that and plan for it. If more arrive it's a bonus. If you plan for everything and only get half you'll get in trouble.
You get an instance piece of terrain, you can move 2" for disembark, and you can shoot, though you count as moving. You can't assault however But it's bad enough for them as it is.
Get a large squad 8-10 men, and give them an assault weapon. Melta guns, flamers, bolt pistols and close combat weapons. Show up, jump out, blow something to smithereens, watch it run away. Then move, fire, and assault the next unit in line. Properly executed most armies will not be able to respond effectively. If his major shooting units are all clustered in the back, drop in and blow them up. If all his assault units are on one flank, drop on the other. If they are spaced out fairly evenly, drop everything on one side and roll up his line.
You don't have to use Drop pods all the time but remember that they are a useful tool. The Eldar player I go against regularly HATES when I use them. I pop out and flame his guardians to death all the time and there isn't anything he can do to stop it except hope I get some bad scatters.
May your aim be true, and your targets plentiful.
Drop Pods work best for units with assault weapons and lots of rapid fire.
Tactical Squads 10 Strong- 10x bolters= 20 shots
Terminators 5 strong with 2 Assault Cannons- 3x Stomr Bolters= 6 shots and 8 Assault Cannon shots
Dreadnaught with Assault Cannon= same as above
I only like using Terminators in Drop Pods. Since you can target anywhere near terrain and not die, its worth it's points. Plus all those rending shots spilling right out makes for lots of blown up tanks.
