doe the drop troops doctrine cost anything? i was just wondering because being able to deep strike practically your whole army seems kind of overpowered. although i am new and have only played 2 small games (200-300) with my friends so i might not know what i am talking about.
No, it doesn't cost anything. The drawbacks are:
a) theres always the chance you'll roll a double one and the squad is gone
theres also the chance that you'll land on top of an enemy unit and the unit will be wiped out
c) the only thing that can deep strike is Guard Infantry and Sentinels, which means you can still take other units but you split your force in half thus making it weaker
d) kind of like above, but you can't really take tanks becuase without non-deep striking troops to defend the tanks they'll die. Armor 12 on the side isn't that tough, and it's not that tough to find a side to hit.
e) if you decide not to deep strike your entire army you run the risk that the local fluff-nazi will start beating you with a chair.
The other thing is in larger games it will not seem as good. In a 200 point game with objectives you need to meet (like a take & hold) you will certaily fare very well. In a 1500 points Battle senario mission deep strike won't seem quite so nice. (Don't get me wrong, it's still good just not as overpoweredly so).
