A friend and I were discusing heavy support options the other day and we fell out over devastors versus tanks. I think tanks are better since they can still move and fire. He believed the devies ruled because it would take multilpe hits to kill the squad. So, what HS unit is really packin the most for the points?
I agree with your friend on this one. Tanks can move and fire, which is good, however it only takes one shot to take them out. (Granted it has to be a decent shot) A Devastator squad set up in a good position can command the entire board and force your enemy to avoid them, funneling them where you want to attack with your support units. A full Dev squad also takes a lot more than one shot to get rid of. If you're smart, you'll have that squad in some kind of cover, so they'll even get invulnerable cover saves.
Devastator squad wins hands down in my book.
The only thing you have to watch out with a devastors is a big powerful blast like say a basilisk, thats just going to ruin your day. In most situations I think the devies are more efficient but there are times you want a vehicle. If the enemy army is mostly CC then a vehicle is probably harder for them to take out than your devies or on the reverse if your fighting Necrons kiss your vehicles good-bye.
nice points, but i'm still sticking with tanks, I think? does anyone else have any more helpful comments. Also outside of survivability, which HS option gets the most bang for the points?
Straight weapons for points I'd do with tanks. But as pointed out, devastators have much better survivability and can give better bang for the points while being shot at.

1) Chaplain led Assault squad - 2 plasma pistols, powerfisted sergeant
2) 8 man Devastator squad - 4 missile launchers
3) Land Speeder Tornado - HB + AC
