OK so this is my first post on LO but I have been reading these forums for a couple months. iG are my first army but I was given about 1000 points of grey knights. For IG i have a Bassie, Demolisher, Russ, 2x Sentinels, and a Chimera. Note that I list the tanks first ;-). As it stands now i have a enough guardsmen to get one platoon, an armored fist, a few vets, my HQ and a fire support team. I am still in the process of building the army.
My question is, what balance do you gus try to strike between troops and vehicles? I picked IG for the vehicles, specifically the the sentinels (yes I saw Return of the Jedi when I was young and impressionable), and I like my armor. However, I also like to be a threat to my enemy. More oftent than not I find myself 4-5 turns in with most if not all of my vehicles still walking around and my troops headed for the hills. I have been playing assaulty armies more recently which might account for the lack of survivability on the part of my meatbags.
So anyways where should I go from here? I recently added a tooled up psycher (honorifica and force weapon) which helpd with the cc for a small cost but that mainly slowed my oponant down for my tanks. At this point I'm eyeing a Hellhound and I typically play a 1500 point list.
I personally have a more infantry based list (I just can't say no to hordes of infantry slogging across the battlefeild) though many others prefer to have much more armour. Apparently it can work quite well if you have a list with a larger amount of tanks and other such armour. There's actually a list devoted [almost] entirely to tanks, with only the occasional Armoured Fist Squad. Here it is if you're interested:

As for what to get next if you're sticking with the normal IG list then a Hellhound would probably be a good buy. I find Hellhounds surprisingly effective, and they're extremely useful when enemies are hiding behind terrain. If you may be interested in the Armoured Company list then perhaps another Leman Russ might be in order. You can always modify to another chasis if you'd prefer. Whatever you decide to do, good luck, and welcome to the Guard!
I second the above poster. In fact, where one hellhound is surprisingly effective, three are absolutely devastating
I have too many armies to list in my signature!
It matter what knid of list you want. Like the Political spectrum, there are different things on the spectrum of vehicles to infantry.
To the right, is the armoured core, fitted with only vehicles, and possibly some infantry mounted in chimeras. This is the pure tank/vehicles list, and is fast, powerful and interesting. They have a lack of numbers though, so watch out!
To the left, there is a pure infantry army, it contains whole hordes of men ready to die for our immortal Emperor. This has huge amounts of numbers, good heavy weapons from the platforms, and some elites even thrown in sometimes. This lacks in powerful or even accurate guys most of the time, but like they say, "One lasgun is crap, 120 aren't".
In between are the balances of vehicles and infantry, allowed a good amount of armor, heavy weapons, and some nice shooters in there somewhere.
I play a list with about three hellhounds, one Russ, and a chimera. You should usually have less vehicles than infantry squads for the good balance, that way your not going too overboard on vehicles, but also field at least 2-4 to make the vehicles still making a difference.
Looks like I'll be getting a hellhound then, nothing like a smurf smore to warm the heart. I think then the way to go will be to add another 10 or 20 guys to my platoon and add a Hellhound. Perhaps I need a bit more beef in my meatsheilds to actually be any good. Still not sure how to deal with the carnifexes though, even with all the lascannons i take i couldn't seem to bring them down, though it didnt help that the guy i was playing brought 4 to the table... "what'll we do sarge our guns aren't hurting it!" "Hold the line son, hold the line..." I no longer appreciate toughness seven critters.
Anyway no more about the carnifexes, I probably shouldn't hijack my own post. More armor does seem pretty safe, most of the the guys I'm playing can't kill what I am fielding now. Same for the extra troops, can't have those 'nids getting hungry
Meh, i like IG for the sheers mass of fire power they can produce, and the numbers i.e "we out number most opponents 4:1 in guns and men, we cant fail." kinda thing. So i'd be a middle in Flaks list.
For a real fighting lsit i'd say all heavy slots filled with either lemans or bassie combinations, and the n the rest of the army troop platoon 4-6 units etc., and maybe some vets 1-2, and my personnal favortie 1-4 fire support squad. Any combination of the above units is pretty standard in msot lists i see, as far as game down here go it dos very nicely.
In any case happy hunting
For those enemies who willingly move against the Supreme judgement, of the Divine Emperor of man kind, Eternal death shall be granted. Amen
i have 77 guardsmen and 5 tanks, so i think it's quite balanced. Not too much of the one thing. note that the tanks are a russ, 2 demolishers and 2 hellhounds.:shifty:
