Its been a few years since I last played 40k and am looking to get back in. Was looking for a good all around chapter choice for an army with a mix of range and CC. I was thinking of Ultramarines, but was wondering if there might be any better choices. Thanks for your time and assistance.
The 4th ed. SM codex has a new fangled trait system for creating your own chapter. You might check that out.Originally Posted by Spector

If you're looking for a somewhat balanced mainstream army, I would say Space Wolves. They have access to probably the coolest unit yet, Long Fangs. Their shooting can help to support their storm claws and Wulfen.
just read the SM codex, go to the closes hobby center and talk to the store guys. then pick out which color scheem you want, what style you want to play... dnt listen to us... we wi just biker. see i will say black templars are the coolest go them, but a space wolf player will say be quiek reflex, you dont know what your talking about, thena blook angel player will say, be quiet both of you, you both suck, then i will say no your both wrong black templars are the coolest... and it becomes a vitious cycle.
lol, be quiet reflex you don't know what you're talking about.
But seriously, Space Wolves or a trait army are your best bet if you want a mix of CC and shooting. At least that's what I reckon.

Um...I suggested the army that my Dark Angels hate.Originally Posted by Reflex

Well it really depends on how much CC and range you want in your army as the already mentioned ones all have their perks and downs. Though I'm no expert (who wants to fight for the emperor with CC when you can fight for the Hive Mind in CC...we do it better anyways...) I would say SW would probally be your best bet though if you want 13th company or codex thats up to you.
Is it me or does any other necron player get annoyed when they see people saying "Necrons eat souls". How is that even possible as souls are part of the warp and necrons want nothing to do with it? Eh probaly me just me being picky.

He is right. Reflex has hit the nail on the head. Unless you already know what theme your army is and what Chapter as the case may be, do NOT come to us. The following armies can be argued over indefinately:
As the sociopathic Traits user, I'll say go with traits because they allow you army to be your own, with modifications to suit your taste in warfare.
- Space Wolves
- Blood Angels
- Dark Angels
- Black Templars
- Raven Guard
- White Scars
- Imperial Fists
And shut up Reflex! rofl
Post your army lists in the ARMY LIST section! Not that hard!
I agree with E!_Mance .. traits army give you a "custom" feel... i myself play Traits,Deathwing, SW and 13th Company , and i enjoy them all, but it really depends on what's your way of playing, and how much strategy you can use. If you want point and shot, then don't go Traits, SW, 13th, BA, BT.. juz stick with Ultramarines or Dark Angels, by no means i try to offend a Dark Angels player, as I'm one myself, but we tend to be shooty

Well since it seems you want balance, I'd stick to the codex. The basic list is really highly adaptable, depending on your unit choices. The basic strength of codex SM's is their flexibility--you lose some of that when you start playing with traits, because for the most part you are emphasizing something and sacrificing something else. It also tends to drive up the point costs.
If you stay codex you can either do UM's or devise your own paint scheme and come up with a good chapter name, and VOILA you're ready to go.
