I am just wondering straight out what a good unit to use for countering CC armies is. I have good enough forces to do some damage, but I fear when the time comes to fight in assault I will be slaughtered. I have a few options of my own, if you could either agree with them so I can see what to use, or add your own.
Hunting Lances, but only for one time use, so they are effective one time only, but very cheap.
Very pricey, but strong and tough.
Sentinels with flamers
Destroyed easily, but effective against CC infantry (possibly a different variant with multi-lasers?)
The only thing good against a CC army as imperial guard is killing them before they hit your lines. You could buy a full squad of ogryns, but with the points you save from not getting them the normal units will help you more.
Though unnumbered lurking perils await us, our blades will ever be ready.
FOR WE ARE THE EMPEROR'S VENGEANCE!
Personally I'd forget the Ogryns.
The rough riders make an excellent counter-charge. Take 10 give the sgt a power weapon and the rest hunting lances.
Dunno about the heavy flamer sentinals, suppose it would be effective.
In terms of the actual models the Ogryns are outrageously expensive but it's better to convert some from the new fantasy Ogres. The current rough rider models are just plain ugly. There are some good ones on FW and Im sure there's some good conversions for rough riders floating around.
Best couter we have too assault is too space our boys out 7" apart and let them chew a squad up and then blast them next turn, make sure that you dont use the offices Ld as you want them to get run down
Well that or take gray nights but i wouldnt as were the guard and we can handle things ourselfs
"Hey sarge, this lasgun is heavy. I wish we had something lighter."
FF7: ABOUT RANDOM BATTLES
The best combo I can think of is 10 rough riders with hunting lances.
Just say your opponent uses a 250 point squad of 5 Grey knight terminators agains you 110 points worth of rough riders.
Assuming you get the charge (you should due to your mobility) and you have 20 lance attacks that hit on 4+. 10 will hit, 7-8 would wound and then at least 5 would die.
not a bad combo.
i plan to use the following rough rider set up....
10 rough riders: 9 with hunting lances and laspistols, vet sgt with power weapon and hunting lance. Carapace armour for the whole unit. (doctriine) = 141pts
21 hunting lance attacks charging, plus 4+ saves to help them survive initial volleys of fire.
2000pts Orks 4-2-1
I also tend to try and keep my squads 7 inches apart but I usually get tired of twisting my body around the table to move two full platoons in close orders. I like the Rough Riders but I think the models suck so I went with the indirect fire and snipers. My motto is "Pin them down and shoot tell they die or I do". My Ratlings pin at least 2 squads and some times my Basilisk's don’t leave left over, but my main appoint is a Necron player and the artillery usually goes for the Monolith or the Night Bringer.
If you do things right people wont be sure if you have done anything at all.
Ranks upon ranks of conscripts.
50 Conscripts won't kill much but they will tie up even the best CC unit for a couple turns. Even 30 conscripts is a good amount of bodies to throw at the enemy, and very cheap to boot. For leadership purposes...keep them near your HQ squad or throw an independant commisar in with them (or guant/yarrick).
Also, if you know your opponent is going to get up close to you, a demolisher is a surefire way to make him regret getting within 24" of your line. Just keep in mind that it will attract any long range firepower he has.
707 Travalonian Armored Brigade
If the tanks succeed, then victory follows.

IMO if youre afraid of CC you should ally yourself with witch hunters/grey knights and take their CC units. Arco flagellants from witchies is a pretty nice counter assault unit, as well as the basic grey knight. One of the CC assassins is also another option, although you need to take an inquisitor lord if you want an assassin.
