I've been fighting against tyranids alot lately and cant seem to beat them, I kill most the little character before they reach me with my russes, but find the monsterous creatures, stomp on through to rip everything apart.
I was wondering if anyone had tips on how to destroy the nids.
I play nids and the easiest way to take down monsterous creatures is to use lascannons. Some on tanks or in heavy weapon squads will take the guys down in a few turns without drawing fire away from the little guys since they can be taken down relatively easy by las guns. Plasma guns in each squad also give you some insurance and also allow you to take down both warriors and monsterous creatures.

that is suicide, so keep the squads cheap, just the guns, adn deepstirke
then (when the kamakizes are clear or dead) blast them to hell with 3 rusdes, that way you should land 1 or 2 blasts
finish it off with a lascannon support squad if they are stil there
that leaves you with almost every guards man to lhoot at the nids that are still charging headfirst at you
I like to use a couple of things against 'Nids, and one of them isn't tanks in the modern lists. They use way too many Monstrous Creatures, and those can be really shooty with Venom Cannons. They can only Glance your tanks, but that means you won't be shooting with them.
Lascannons in HW Platoons are great to focus fire on MCs, two are preffered with Sharphooters. Heavy Bolters in Squads with Grenade Launchers would be my troop choice, with some of your squads with Las/Plasma combos as well.
Grenadiers or Stormies can be a help with two Plasma guns and without transports. Both with better AP on Hellguns and Plasma Guns and better BS.
The other thing to worry about is targeting priority. 'Nids can be quick, so hit the fast troops first. Let them hit a "bait" squad and move away so you can rapid fire them when they kill your squad. This is where a Vox can come in handy. You can choose to use the base leadership instead of the Officers, to help you "fail".
I play against Bugs a lot, and they are surprisingly shooty, so be ware.
Hope this helps.

But a basilisk would be useless, it is for the buggers which he has no problem against. But you need heavy bolters for infantry hordes, and lascannons for TMC's. Best way to do it, possibly have conscripts make a speed bump so you can kill more hordes before they finally meet you head on.
and maybe some hidden power fists as a last resort. Commisars are good with this, because they aren't independent characters but can get officer weapons, although they do have their nasty annoying habit of killing 3 wound officers. A way around this is to have a JO in your command HQ and use that with a commisar (and maybe an eviscerator priest, but I wouldn't usually do that) and have one of the platoon HQs with an honorifica for leadership. This is because of the advisors priority order of command HQ, then platoon, then the rest. But hopefully you won't need to use them!
BURN THE HERETIC!
KILL THE MUTANT!
PURGE THE UNCLEAN!

That works without the vox as well you know.Originally Posted by Diggums Hammer

I'm playing in a home-grown campaign at the moment and the Nyds are proving to be suprisingly leathal. They were never one of the armies I would dread playing against (unlike marines ... [shudder]), but in our game they're looking unstoppable at the moment! Having 3 carnifexs bearing down on you just isn't nice...
I reckon hellhounds work well against Nyds (at least for clearing away the little critters). The little Tyranid beasties tend to come at you in hordes, so the template will generally catch a lot of models, plus the range of the Hellhound (unlike a regular heavy flamer) means you can hopefully keep out of harms way (at least for a while).
You can then concentrate on throwing every big hitting gun you've got against the big gribblies.
So my humble Guardsman's fist is as strong as a blast from his laser rifle?
