hi, what are your opinions on instead of having 1-2 dreads for fire power a grey knight landraider was used in its place. I realise that the Land Raider is costly and not suited as much for a Daemonhunters force as a crusader is, but if used just as an anti-tank/anti-'nid support i thought it would earn its points worth.
what are your thoughts?
Hey an Aussie! ^_^
I'd say the Dreads.
There are several targest (two), and you get the same amount of Twin Linked Lascannons + an additionaly weapon. Also, this means you can target seperate... targets.
Esepcially against Nids I would go the Dreads, as Nids don't have anything really good against armour.
However, the LRC against nids could be quite nasty indeed.
The problem with Dreads is their low armor... its just too easy to kill em.
I actually field 2 Dreads with either 1500 or 2000 points and depending the opponent they are TLLC/ML x2 or TLLC/ML - AC/DCCW...
But I am seriously debating the idea of a Land Raider (given to the Inquisitor as transport) lately.
If I lose round 1 and the dread is anywhere outside good cover they tend to die... at least that has happened against : IG, Tau, Necrons (monolith), Iron Warriors, Eldar.
The only group that did not manage to at least 1 dread in one round is Orcs!
Off course I realise that having 2 targets rather than 1 makes it much easier but it just seems worthless to have two targets that can be potentially killed by str 6 weapons rather than one that needs at least str 8 to do the same.
It really pissed me of last game that a single shot from a plasma pistol (A PLASMA PISTOL FOR CHRIST SAKES!) just killed of my AC/DCCW dread that was ready to charge a unit of IG men and bring them down...
On the other hand again a LR has 2 TLLC and a HB... and off course you have the option for a hunter killer missile in there... that means potentially 3 shot that can kill AV 14 from a really safe distance... perhaps even from cover. (Much easier to hide 1 vehicle than 2)
Since Grey Knight Troops are vulnerable to enemy fire, and since you already wont have alot of vehicles with pure knights, go with the Land Raider. It's big enough to be used as cover, when it dies too-its still helping you out. With the AV14 its tougher to crack than a dreadnought for sure. The fire magnet ability would help out in such extreme limitations. 2 Dreads can dish out more pain but cannot recieved much in return due to their weak armor.
I hate to correct our new, most excellent Mod, but 'Nids can be very shooty and good against armour. S10 Venom Cannons might not kill your tanks, but they will keep them from shooting.Originally Posted by Lord Yossanrion

The AV12 of Dread isn't that Great, but it certainly ins't the points of the LR. With the Multimelta and TLAC, I much prefer the LRC to the regular LR for Grey Knights.
My two bits.....

Really, its all good. At least I got that bit about the LRC right.
Anyways, back on topic! Doing a good job here.
I personally like the use of the plasma cannon/missile launcher combo on dreadnoughts when versing horde armies (like the nids).
I find the two blast weapons to be very satisfying and a krak missile (or two) can usually bring down or at least damage the nids bigger critters.
For example, the carnifex is nowhere near as fast as normal nids with their fleet rules. This means that you will probably get a couple of turns firing at it before it gets to your lines.
Two dreads with the above mentioned kit, the missile is more likely to wound it, BUT, the plasma cannon has the same AP as a lascannon and can deal with extended carapace.
Now, i know someone will say....but a lascannon has the same AP and its more likely to wound....BUT, i usually try to plan my lists to be as versatile as possible and i find the plasma cannon arm can be adapted to kill big things and little ones rather nicely.
Apart from this, i must agree with the honourable 'Diggums Hammer', take many many GK. Storm bolters are just about the nastiest things against nids (dont use incinerators to much, nids are simply to fast and you probably wont get the chance to use them).
On the LR/LRC topic, i would highly recomend the LRC over the standard LR any day.
Its just, well, better!
As well as being AV 14, it is equiped with much more anti-infantry type weapons than its cousin and if needs be, you can sit a GM + GKT retinue inside it, move, jump out, shoot a little and then charge......
this gives you almost the charge range of the nids (weeeeeel, its better than nothing!) and you you stirke at I 10 when charging out of the LRC....offsetting nids tiresomely lovely initiative value.
Anyways, similiar to how Diggums put it,
Thats my two cents worth,
