Apologies for posting here but I can't seem to find a strategy secion.
A mate & I typically play Space Wolves vs poxy Eldar and he always ends up walking over me with the Avatar. What's the best strategy against it ? Close assault is suicide and about the only other option is a squad of assault cannon termi's.
The Space Marines section would be an appropriate place for this thread.
Anyway, the Avatar has a rather poor Save. It's Invulnerable, but it's still not all that great and it is the only save the model has. Simply hit it with enough firepower and it will fall -- quite a bit faster that most other Monstrous Creatures, too.
Why do the survivors remain anonymous -- as if cursed -- while the dead are revered? Why do we cling to what we lose while we ignore what we still hold?
Name none of the fallen, for they stood in our place, and stand there still in each moment of our lives.

I agree with Ostsol. I once used an Avatar and it fell rather quickly to massed Tau firepower. Other than that , just avoid it and it will be wasted points for your opponent.

Bumped to SM forum
(you could also try asking in the Eldar forum)
50 ways to leave your lover.. erm I mean kill an avatar:
1: Scouts with sniper rifles - not a common choice with SW but damn effective as the Avatar depends on high T for survival which sniper rifles ignore
2. Long fang squads - heavy weapons will take him down
3. Land speeder tornados - ACs and HBs will mess him up
4. ven and other dreads, ACs in particular will hurt him, but so will TLLCs and MLs
5. large blood claws packs dosed with power fists - he can not target the fists so you should be able to get plenty of hits on him
6. to be honest the same approach for grey hunters although melta guns and plasma pistols will help too
7 bikers - it is possible to charge him with a leader with a power fist but you wont last long, far better to stay out his reach and shoot him with meltas or plasma
8. Predetors - pretty much any flavour
10 in fact pretty much anything in the SW army can do an avatar with the right equipement and approach, about the only thing you want to be carefull of is close combat
Everything you have been told is a lie!
Well said by Cher.
I personally love to set 1-3 Speeders armed with an Assault Cannon and Heavy Bolter on his case.
Really does a great job on him! Although it can be kind of tricky sometimes if he sets up something to counter your speeders and try and shoot them down when they pop up to try and take a shot at the avatar, so it may be useful to have a few things that are said above up your sleeve.
Personally, I have played against the avatar several times. My army always sports a devastator squad with four heavy bolters. With 36" range, twelve S5 shots have always hosed down an 80 point hunk of god in one volley. Unfortunately, the eldar (of any variety) have so many targets for my heavy bolters, that I almost feel guilty wasting a round on the avatar...
Good news vs. eldar:
1) your heavy bolters will always see a target rich environment.
2) a 150 point dev squad can easily hose down 500-600 points before all the eldar models are gone
Bad news vs. eldar:
1) A wise player will shoot your heavy bolters ASAP
