All to often on this forum I see the same question asked over and over again "How are you supposed model veterans?" Although some people like converting and tinkering around with there models to make them standout I for one try to conceal or hide my key veteran units from my enemy. I dont know how many people already use this tactic but its said that veteran guard squads have squad numbers thats that start with one or two zeros. So the tatic is pretty simple actually, start by painting your veteran guardsmen the same way as you do your normal guardsmen and then just stick a squad number transfer on him that starts with zero and its as easy as that! This way your oppenent will have know idea and will hopefully just treat your veteran squad like any other guard unit until you pop him in the a$$ with BS4 Lascannon or Heavy Bolter. After that its almost guaranteed that your veterans will be seeing a lot more fire power coming there way during your enemy's next shooting phase. So I also sujest that you wait till your veterans are in a key poistion until you reveal what they are. Hope this tip helped somebody.
P.S. I sujest taking the veterans doctrine and maxing out your elite section with veterans so you can really get your enemy's head spinning.
And ALWAYS give them shotguns, you gotta be a real guardsman to use shotguns.

Unless, of course, you infiltrate your vets, and they're carrying 3 plasma guns. It usually then becomes abundently clear.
"Wait, you can have 3 plasma guns in guard squads? And they can infiltrate"
"Oh, they're your vets. Ok, Dev squad is shooting at the vets then"
I actually like to deep strike my vets with 3 plasma guns and a plasma pistol, because it keeps my enemy seriously off balance. I usually take 3 of such squads. Works magnificently.
"And any man who comes through this fight mostly unharmed will be my sister! It'll be free frocks and jollies for ever, you'll see!"

i suggested a similar idea except using last chancers instead. it basically meant mixing last chancers with bombs in with normal squads. the only thing with veterans is that they dont exactly pack a big punch in comparison with demoliton charge totting last chancers
