So im still workin out the details on how to get into IG. Then i stumbled upon a list in the army list section that used the catachan codex from a GW website.
First off... is this a legal list? I mean doesnt require opoents permision and can be used in tournaments?
It seams that alot of their special rules (ambush and boobytraps) can only be used durring certian senarious (jungle fighting). Is this the case? I Think i really like the idea of a jungle fighting force with demo charges and the likes. But i dont like having special rules i can only use durring non-standard misssions.

im not totally sure if its tournament legal, it probably depends on the tournament
in order to use this codex you have to be using jungle fighters rules which requires your oppopnents permission.
Where there's a will there's a weapon
Yes, it is completely legal according to GW. You can always use those special rukes in standard scenarios, but Catachans depend on the terrain a lot. So, while you may be allowed to ambush, it doesnt mean that you will always have a good chance to. For example- The only scrap of trees is a tiniy little copse off to one side of the field, or worse, in your own deployment zone. I have found that, in Jungle, they are fun to play, and even in the jungle (though some will disagree) they are far from unbeatable. Where I play, theres barely any trees used most of the time, so if I want use use them as catachans, I will ask if anyone is interested in playnig a game against jungle fighters in the jungle. Usually, I get turned down, but if thats all thats available to them, then Ill get a game in.
I did play one wonderful battle patro lgame againsst tau though...I lost 2 men. Flamed kroot in the jungle, Support squad that was in jungle 6" took out 1.5 FW squads and immobilised a hammerhead. Snipers pinned on e of the FW squads, and Devils Ambushed, killed hammer head and finished up with the FWs...only losses were from the kroot. The reason why I didnt lose many was because I stuck to the jungle. it is your friend! Otherwise, his burst cannons would have really hurt...
My catachans see more time as regualr guard than as catachans, mostly due to other players misconception of how powerful they are in the jungle. From our perspective, they are lsightly better than guard in the jungle, and much worse out of it.
How many guardsmen does it take to screw in a lightbulb?
None, their lasguns work fine.
Well, I have been looking at the list some a lot lately since my friend plays them and I was noticing that although they are great in jungle, there are a few stragegies and ways of constructing your list that on paper, look like they would do pretty good even out of jungle. From what I've seen, the real strength is in the elites as these are much better than many normal elites, although expensive. The snipers are unparelled and I also noticed you could have a squad of vet assault team with 3 guys with plasma or melta guns and a normal sergant for 76 points. The main probelm with them out of jungle, is the lack of heavy support as you may have noticed. They have some problems since they can't have any tanks, only a heavy flamer sentinal for a vehicle.

Thanks in advance.
"Why me?" Gideon begged, falling to his knees.
He looked pleadingly at the Haemonculi who regarded him with a twisted smile. As the door slammed shut, Gideon could hear Vect's laughter echoing off the walls of the corridor beyond, the Dark Lord's voice carried into the torture chamber:
No, you can only set up ambushes when jungle fighting rules are being used, it says this under abushes in the codex. Same goes for booby traps, as stated under booby traps in the codex. What you can still use though is the deathworld vet abilities, as in infiltrating into woods, better save in woods, movement and such.

Even thought it is legal, Catachans in tournaments are usually hard to win with due to lack of armor. But it would still be fun. One thing i did once was minimize my squad sizes to about 6 each with a plasma or melta. this allows me to get maximum firepower out for a fairly cheap price. The only problem is that then I have to deal with alot more moral checks, but it does give an enemy more things to shoot at.
Just me opinion.

How many Inquisitors does it take to screw in a lightbulb? Three,
one to screw it in, one to outlaw lightbulbs, and one to deny lightbulbs ever existed.
We in it shall be remembered...
We band of brothers."
