The Whirlwind, The Annihilator, The Vindicator

I am trying to finish building a shooty Vanilla SM 1500 pt army.

Ive browsed the forums, gotten a few ideas...however im not set on What to go with on finishing my army in the heavy support section.

    My heavy support consists of:

    1 Devastator squad 8 marines w/missle launchers (x4), bolter (x4) 200 pts

1 Predator Annihilator w/HB sponsons, armour 135 pts

this brings my point count to 1365 with 135 pts to spare

    model count 37+4

Im giving this information more to try to discuss the advantages and disadvantages to what the last Heavy Support model would be. Would adding a second Annihilator be the best? i personally would love to add a whirlwind instead. Im also considering the Vindicator.

Ive read many different opinions regarding all 3 models. There are some pros and some cons. such as the vindicators short range but the huge punch it has. Whirlwinds and there long range but weak Strength. Annihilators are good all around but i think fielding the other tanks would work better vs certain armies.

What is everyones opinoin on finishing this army out? what armies are the different tanks more efficient at taking out ?

Im willing to purchase 1 of each of these tanks if thats the best way to go. My heart is set on the whirlwind.. but ill forgo that if its a complete waste of points.

    Thanks everyone for your input

    -zed

Whirlwinds are perfect. While a little limited in range for Ordnance Barrage, it can still cause pinning. A very valuable tool to the Space Marine.

Vindicators are great. When you think about it, 24" is actually quite the distance.
Take out a tape measure and go to 2 feet. You'll see what I mean.

Try both and see which fits your army better.

Personally i love my whirlwind, I almost always use it, to badd grey knights cant have one. If you are good at guessing ranges, (it is easy to practice just place a couple models then guess the ranges), this tank is perfect for you and will be worth its points every time.

I'm thinking that point wise the wirlwind is the better option as you can fill out your squads a little better. I dont like low model count army's.

If you had the 160 pts to make the Vindi with POMS and extra armour then I'd say go that way. Vindi's dont show up much where I play but boy do they get the attention when they do!

If you already have a Pred Annhilator and Dev squad, I'd say you already have enough Heavy Support ina 1500 list, and that if I saw your whole list I'd probably say you need Troops, not Heavy Support.

Either way, I think you need to ensure you've got some other vehicles that can draw attention away from the Annhilator. If it's the only vehicle you've got, it's going to get picked on and probably won't be effective. But if you've got other tanks they can force your opponent into making a difficult choice. A whirlwind is normally hidden so won't offer any help in this regard. I'd say your BEST choice is to take some transports for your tacticals. If you know how to use them, they can be quite effective. You'll simply have to emphasize rapid-fire over assault to get the most out of them.

But if you're dead set against transports (as many are) and you really insist on Heavy Support over more Troops, then I'd deffinitely recommend a second Annhilator with HB sponsons.

Unfortunately, nowadays you don't guess the range anymore for whirlwind or anything for that matter. Now it's just scatter and dice. Darn 4th edition rules, always loved guessing

My list is for a shooty Vanilla SM army so this was why i had decided on the 3 Heavy supports.I figure i would use this list against some of the armies i face, nids and other SM/chaos armies Here is my list if that would be more helpful.

    HQ
Commander w/power weapon, bp, iron halo
jump packs, melta bombs, frags - 142 pts

    Elite
    Dreadnought w/assault cannon, heavy flamer,
    armour, smoke - 123 pts

    Troops
    Tac #1 - 115 pts
    6 marines w/lascannon, plasma gun, bolter (x4)

    Tac #2 - 115 pts
    6 marines w/lascannon, plasma gun, bolter (x4)

    Tac #3 - 115 pts
    6 marines w/lascannon, plasma gun, bolter (x4)

    Fast attack
Land Speeder Tornado - 80 pts

Land Speeder Tornado - 80 pts

    Assault Squad- 260 pts
    9 marines w/plasma pistol (x2), bolt pistol (x7)
    Veteran Sergent w/power fist, bp

    Heavy support
    Devastator Squad- 200 pts
    8 marines w/ missile launchers (x4), bolter (x4)

Predator Annihilator w/heavy bolter sponsons, armor - 135 pts

3rd Heavy choice (undecided) 135 pts left: 2nd Predator 120 pts, a whirlwind 85 pts or an Vindicator 125 pts. Ill even get all 3 and use them depending on the army i fight.

I made a post as well in the army list forum as well to address some other issues.http://www.librarium-online.com/foru...ce-1000-a.html

I figured with this army vs assaulty armis i would hold back the Assault/ fast attack squads and use them to counter attack. Vs shooty armies i would use the heavy support and shooty squads to remove any serious threats while i move my fast attacks up a flank.

I would assume that the vindicator is better vs lower role armor save models while the whirlwind is better vs high count higher role models ?

I agree with Grotstompa that your lone tank is going to get picked on. I've always had problems with lists that have a single vehicle in it. So much fire at one vehicle and it will inevitably fall. Giving what info you have given I'd personally go with another Annihilator.

I generally take 2 Dreadnoughts, a Predator Annihilator, and a Vindicator.

This is kind of cool, because my opponents tend to focus on my Vindi while my Plasma Cannon Dreadnoughts and Lascannon Predator turns his army to mince meat.

More tanks (except Rhinos)=mince meat of your enemy

Seeing your army list, I'm even MORE in favor of beefing up your tacticals. The dread will help draw fire from the Pred (just a little) but I'm guessing in most games they'll be destroyed by the end of turn 3 or "stunned to death."
