What chapter of Space Marine do you collect?
I still haven't decided which chapter to go with (hence the not painting my minis yet) and thought bout UM but I dunno what makes them special. IE DA is stubborn. That and the fact that I haven't come across many people (ie none) who play UM as their SM army.
Theres a poll currently ongoing as to who plays which chapter, it's here:
DA have more specialisation than UM and are plain cooler, going for a "different army with SM is a little pointless though, there are a fair few of us.
Every time you read this sig: a fairie dies!
Ultramarines are your normal well balanced marines with a few more specialized units like Tyranid Hunters. Alot of people play this chapter becuase its balanced and easy to use and they don't want to be stuck with a chapter that has difficult to use special rules like Blood Angels. However other chapters special rules can be very fun to use and play with. Dark Angels for example get alot of cool stuff that other space marine chapters don;t get such as Plasma Cannons on Dreads:w00t: . It all depends on your personal preference and style of play. If you want a really personal chapter make a trait chapter, otherwise there is a premade chapter for almost anyone. Good luck

UM used to be THE bog standard marine chapter, I still encounter more UM players than any other chapter, however 4th ed SM codex gave them some quirks (honour guard, nid vets) and so the one thing that made them special (there was nothing special about them) was blown!
Since you can choose what colour to paint your marines regardless of what rules you use, (sucessor chapters) I would recomend picking a chapter that plays the way you want to play, be it one of the more established ones (Dark Angels, Blood Angels, Space wolves, Black Templars, Ultramarines, Whitescars, Raven Guard, Crimson Fists, Iron hands etc etc (bored already) or their variants, or a trait based chapter)
Otherwise you will pick an army based on fluff/ what someone else thinks is cool, and then find you cant use it very well or it bores you
Everything you have been told is a lie!
Hey If I were you I would go with UM. Usually I tell people to go with SPace WOlves because they are pretty cool. But can be tricky to start with. Also UM and easy and fun to learn to play with. So I would stick to the UM for your first army.:w00t:
blood_angelmarine, space wolves vens. and chaos dreadnaughts can get plasma cannons on their dreads too! lol
I used to have a blood angels and a dark angels army when i started in 1996 lol
It's always nice to experiment with Space Marines as the chapter system allows for a huge range of fluff, paint schemes and armies (if you're so creatively inclined) and I think a player has to have a good reason for going for the Games Workshop invented ones. Either they suit the player down to a tee or the player is new and is looking for a new way into the hobby.
Often a newly created chapter evolves via the player from the founding chapters, which might be a nice way to start it. Or choose a founding chapter and base your army on a particular regiment.
I play "Disciples of Hephaestus" my own shooty army, following all UM rules with the exception of no 'Nid Veterans. There are Honour Guard, but I call them "Hephaestean Guard/Elite" depending on how I feel.
