If anyone has any ideas regarding different "non-chapter-specific" setups for Marines, go ahead and post them.
I'm trying to get some setups, playtest them, then tweak them for use.
This will even outrange Tau.
2 Whirlwinds placed side-by-side and just within each others range. Dev squad or 2 min/max squads placed as far back as possible whle still able to hit both Whirlwinds.
Not even Tau will get in that without taking damage. Only works if both Whirlwinds are behind cover.
Whirlwind range - 48"
Marine range - 48" with Lascannon or Missile.
together is 96" from marines. Take about 8" for firing arcs.
You end up with 88" range. A mighty coverage (as the S5 will still damage with correct scatter).
When the enemy comes into range of the Whirlwinds, they are pelleted. They're trying to hit the 2 Marine Squads as they're in LoS, but for anything to get in range to hit it they need to brave the Whirlwinds.
Logically, they'll go in to target the Whirlwinds, hiding in the safe gap between them, right? wrong. It's not safe. the Marines lay waste to the intruders. If an enemy tries to flank, the Marines & other Whirlwind can attack. Scatter damage to the threatened tank doesn't matter as it'll die soon anyway without that cover fire.
It's a nasty thing to see in the battlefield. Your opponent looks at it and groans inwardly.
Post your army lists in the ARMY LIST section! Not that hard!
I just want to clarify my first post.
I'm looking for setups, like on the table unit positions and things like that, and different ways to pick your units. Different ways to kit out characters and squads that are unusual or just simply interesting. Then, I'd like to give them a try and see what happens. Finally, then I'd tweak them where need be.
Well I wonder how well a Tac squad with meltagun would fare if it had a Vet Sarge with combi-flamer or Combi-melta. Good at bunker-busting and cityfighting I expect. They might also make a good infiltration squad next to some CC scouts, if the army takes SBDBS trait.
Two meltaguns and a Combi-flamer would be good, but probably need a transport to be effective.
I don't ever see anyone use a Sgt with combi-weapon (occasionally a combi plasma....). Too many people like powerfists I guess.
I know that's not all that complex, but I just can't think of any SM gimmicks that haven't been tried before... SM's are well-worn already in 4th ed.
You know, after reading the allies article thing on here, it occured to me that aside from GKs or GKTs, almost no one uses allies with their SMs. I couldn't tell you the last time I saw any in the army list section, and I know I've never played against any aside from the aforementioned GKs or GKTs.
What about a small, shooty SM command squad with an Apoth screening a Callidus Assassin to give her re-rolls on saves? Or maybe scooting a Culexeus up to one end of a squad to kill their LD, then having a librarian on the other end giving them some FotD?
I dunno, just stuff off the top of my head.
I think all of the SM codex combos are pretty played out as Grotstompa mentioned, but it doesn't seem like the allies combos have even had their surface scratched.
We all carry on,
When our brothers in arms are gone.
So raise your glass high
For tomorrow we die,
And return from the ashes you call.
I think a unit of Sisters Repentia would really boost an army well, now that you mention allies. I haven't seen any Witch Hunters in a SM army in all the years I've been playing.
Anyways, I like to get my army up close. My terminators DS and the rest go in Rhinos or DP in. My only heavy support is a whirlwind which gives the Rhinos cover to move in.
One thing that is very underrated is the Bike. I use a single bike to draw fire from everything else. You'll be surprised at how people react to it. Instead of ignoring the bike like they should, they keep they're squads stationary and fire at it with lascannons. Use that to your advantage.
umm... you can't have a single bike, they come in squads with three the minimum. the only way to have a single bike is if you have a H.Q. on a bike which seems a bit of a waste...
I thought you couldnt take Sisters with Marines? That may be the problem with seeing no sister allies in a sm list. I may be wrong though so please correct me if I am.
Erik Moraki's Great Company 16/4/7
Borgut "SBD" GreatStrider's Ogres 6/1/2
An'Gorath's World Eaters 3/0/2
Sigurd GreatFang's Wulfen Host 7/4/3
I've got a couple of quirky ideas:
1) 8 Marines w/2 Plasma guns + a standard Tech Marine w/bolt pistol. With and without Rhino.
2) 8 Dev Marines w/3 Plasma Cannons + a standard Tech Marine w/bolt pistol.
3) 9 Dev Marines w/2 Multimeltas + Vet Sarge w/Powerfist, Infiltrate or Drop Pod.
4) 9 Marines w/Melta gun + a Vet Sarge w/Combi-melta and Lightning Claw. With and without Drop Pod.
You can't have marines in a sisters army. You can do it the other way around, though (same applies to GK).Originally Posted by The Daywalker
