I have been looking at doing a marine army with traits lately. I really like the Red Corsairs. I have seen fairly conflicting answers on what list to use with them. Just wondered if anyone here had the white dwarf and could let me know. Can you use a traits army with them? or do you have to use the Chaos Codex rules with them?
Red Corsairs are a renegade chapter (using the CSM) who used to be the Astral Claws. If you were going to trait system them maybe doing a Astral Claw (pre Babab) army.
In their current configuration, they're mostly renegades from various chapters that have slashed a red X over their old insignia. They've all left the imperium for piracy, and I have no doubt that they have succumbed to chaos to some extent, though subtle. You'd have to go read the fluff from the 2nd ed chaos codex to really get a feel for them, but, if it's any consolation, in the 2nd ed rules they chose their units from the regular SM codex and were simply led by a warped character named Huron Blackheart. The surviving Astral Claws make up something akin to a "first company" among his forces.
Edit: you might also ask the folks in the Chaos forum what they think, if you haven't already. I don't have Codex:CSM or LATD, but the Red Corsairs might already have an official rules set....
Unfortunately niether one does have the rules for them; but as far as the rules do go if you want to field red corsairs then you could use both the marine codex and the chaos codex (not both at the same time mind you.) Just cause you turn renegade does not mean you immediately get horribly warped by chaos and I doubt that every former astral claw has been terribly mutated or completely embraced chaos yet; at the same time there are some, such as the chapter master of the former astral claws, who completely embraces chaos and has become a terrifying daemon prince (thougha non-statured one if memory serves me correctly.) who leads the core of his former chapter and the most powerful of the renegades that have joined his men.Originally Posted by Grotstompa
The first group would be more of a normal marine army, and with so many different types of renegades it would be easy to count them as a trait army; while the second group would definately be one that used the chaos codex...

well, unfortunately there is no hard and fast answer to this one.
in 2nd ed they had special rules and a special character (Luftgt Huron, the Tyrant of Badab). Some of their rules included not having any demons.
in 3rd ed. they pretty much didn't exist for a while and with the latest codex:chaos they are mentioned in the back of the codex. So I guess most people would go for a Chaos undivided/chaos with veteran skills army.
But you should be able to get them to work with an SM with traits army, too.
You might want to search around the internet for Luftg Huron (Huron the Black Hearted, the tyrant of Badab) a bit to see what other people did for his special rules (the tyrants claw and so on).
hope this helps a little bit.
Shut up and play.
