I've been toying with the idea of a power fisted commander and speculating on how well it would perform. Now normally, he would get squashed by a powerfist due to him striking last, but now that we can use adamntium mantles not just salamanders it seems more and more viable. Here's what i was thinking......
Master: Power fist, bolt pistol, adamantium mantle, iron halo, terminator honours = 176pts
6 S8 attacks on the charge is extremely dangerous, and he's now survivable from enemy pwr fists as well.
well, anyone use something like this? comments? ideas?
2000pts Orks 4-2-1
Sure, he can survive enemy power fists... but only 3 unsaved wounds from them. And only 3 unsaved wounds from anything else that strikes first... what about those models that get more than 6 attacks?
Honestly, against things that have lots of attacks, it's a true waste - you get better use out of a hidden Power Fisted sergeant, etc. because they can't be picked out. It's really hard to see this setup working very well, as mostly everything will strike before him, and, regardless of if he has the Mantle or not, he's likely to get smacked around by any CC-oriented model/unit.
That and you can't take a mantle and a halo at the same time.
Oner per army means, one per army.
I ran into a guy that was using both of those on his chaplain last night. That and something else thats restricted, but I forget which one.

Why would he put a halo on a chaplain? They get the rosarius?Originally Posted by starkiller

Point is the only way to get an inv. save on a commander with the mantle (so not a chaplin) is to have terminator armour.
If yo uare going to use a powerfist, give him a power weapon as well, losing a bolt pistol shot is hardly a loss and being able to strike (and ignore armour) in I order as well as powerfisting your enemy is invaluable.
powerfisting the commander is never such a good idea. one he stands out as a target if he has a power fist. if you do use a commander, attach him to a command squad with a power fisted vet sergeant. plus, the commander striking at I1 isn't so great bc the enemy can kill him quicker as opposed to him having a power weap.
there are some instances when it makes sense to have a commander with Powerfist. When you are fighting opponenets with higher inititative that your own.
In that case the COmmander strikes last anyway so having I1 doesn;t cause too much problems. However there are usually rank-and-file troops in those armies where striking at I5 might be of advantage. You could potentially go for a Powerfist and Powerweapon combo. In that case of course you don't get any shooting attacks with him.
A very good option of course is to have a command Squad with a Vet Sarge with Powerfist, as has been previously mentioned.
Shut up and play.
um, beside familiar buffed librarian or inquisitors, which army commanders have a higher iniative than I5(Nightbringer has I4 and Deciever has I5 gasp!)?
Dark Eldar Lords and Wych Lords, to name two. Chaos Lords or Lieutenants w/ Mark of Slaanesh, reducing your I to 4 instead of 5. An Ork Warboss' Waaagh! roll on the charge. Hive Tyrant with Adrenal Glands. Broodlords.Originally Posted by bladeofdeath3
Probably others, but that's all I care to go look into.
Not to mention basic rending genestealers, or a chaos lord/lt with furious charge (assuming he assaults you and not the other way around).
In most situations, I would say that a PFist+PWeapon on an IC is a waste of points. But against things like T6 monstrous creatures, it can be a big help.
