I'm just wondering which is better for the Sisters when it comes to taking on the 'crons, meltas or DG'ed flamers and Hflamers.
No need to roll for DG, blasts away at full effect every time.
Without using DG anyway bolters are ineffective.
Resurrection orb can keep WBB operating anyway.
Lots of hits means many opportunities for DG.
Works well with bolters to finish off survivors.
Poor to middling to wound rolls.
Dependent on faith.
Can't deny WBB.
Points costs are about the same for a flamer and Hflamer or two meltaguns, so I'm not concerned about that. Does anyone have any experience with this sort of thing, any preferences?
You should read the Necron FAQ- Divine guidance (that is what you meant, right?) does deny WBB. Also, Meltas will deny WBB for basic Warriors, Wraiths, and FOs, but Necrons have the ability to take lots of T5 models which will not lose their WBB to a meltagun. Models like the Lord, Immortals, and both kinds of destroyer- all very popular choices. However, one important thing a Meltagun can do that Divine Guidance can't is kill Monoliths. With S8 AP1, it has a 1:6 chance to pen everyone's favorite floating pyramid, something that really scares the crap out of Necron Players.
In regards to Monolith zapping, I'd be inclined to let my Exorcists handle that. Getting a lot of Sisters close in to something with the firepower the pyramid boasts is something I want to avoid if possible. Still being able to threaten it seriously if it gets close would be nice, even if does deny the melta ability.
Reading the Necron FAQ again it's still not fully clear how WBB and DG interacts. In cc DG makes any hits which roll 6 to wound count as power weapons. This therefore denies WBB, which fails when hit in cc by an attack which denies armor saves. The situation is different for shooting however. There DG makes hits which wound on 6 count as AP1. Being hit by an AP1 weapon is not specified as denying WBB. Normally even if struck by shooting attacks which have an AP value high enough to negate their armour save, Necrons still get WBB. Instead WBB is denied for shooting attacks by being hit with a Str value high enough to cause Instant Death. All this means that DG shooting should not deny WBB, unless it is a special exception. Since the FAQ completely fails to distinguish between these two uses of DG I am assuming that normal rules apply and DG shooting does not deny WBB.
In regards to T5 models, another downer on flamers is that their to wound rolls will be poor. Not all casualties come from DG, failed armour saves are still significant. Meltas still put them down on a flat 2+.
Overall I'm beginning to think there's not much in it. Still, I'll need to try things out to see how it works in practice.
