Hey there, as i am about to begin my Space Wolf army, there have been many different opinions on how many units of Blood Claws and Grey Hunters I should get. I originally had 2 GH squads(each w/(7x)bolter,(2x)PW,(1x)Meltagun) in a rino to move up and undeploy in cover w/2 BC Sqauds((2x)PF,(8x)BC's), one to follow each in move in to support the GH Squads while a 3rd GH Squad (same except (1x)Plasmagun instead of the Melta and not mounted in a rino) to support my Wolf Lord Command group. I originaly planned this to have 3 GH squads and 2 BC Squads, but your opinions are appreciated.
NOTE: The reason i placed the GH in the rinos is because they can disembark and still rapid fire while the BC would'nt be able to assult is the left/disembarked from the Rino.:shifty:
Ok just want to enlighten you. GK are already more points then a normal marine. You have to pay an additional point to get the bolter, why do that. Give them all BP and full squads, dont buy any rhinos they are a waste of 50 points that could be spent on maxing out squads. But on to your question.
GH are the supporting role in the SW army while BC are the shock troops. With the GH you want them to be the foward troops while the claws stay behind them for 2 reasons. 1 if they get charged they can hold with their higer WS than a claw and two you can charge the claws in after to utterly destroy the rest of the guys left. I always take 2 squads of GH with 2pfists, Leave the plasma to the claws because they arent worth as much. But remember max out your squads. With claws I like to max to 15 with 3 pfists or plasma. So you want as many GH squads as you have BC squads. They support your army, you can even pod them and rhino rush the Claws. But I wouldnt waste the point to buy a bolter. So in general BC are better assualt troops and GH are your support troops. Use them how they should and you will win a lot.
Erik Moraki's Great Company 16/4/7
Borgut "SBD" GreatStrider's Ogres 6/1/2
An'Gorath's World Eaters 3/0/2
Sigurd GreatFang's Wulfen Host 7/4/3
Well Daywalker is right about the blood claws. They're shock troops, run your grey hunters in front to screen them from getting charged. However I find that the bolter is much better on Grey Hunters. You pay 1 more point so you can an additional bolt shot or the ability to fire 24 inches. Now they lose the charge bonus but so what? Your expecting them to get charged for the most part. Also I find that in general, you'll want one grey hunter unit per blood claw unit.
Also since you seem to be going for a fairly infantry based army my recomendation for heavy support is either vindicators or long fangs. Predators are really just asking for it. A whirlwind is fairly effective but you normally have pretty good infantry killing power already.
Well, from your opinions I can see what you mean. But GH w/bolters are better then those with BP because they at least get 2 turns to shoot the enimie and they can hold there own pertty well in close combat. Also, rinos do have a lot weaknesses(ARMOR:wacko: ) but there main purpose is to move them forward then disembark on the first turn to put the GH Squads in a better position to fire w/ a BC squad following to support them if they get charged. The 3rd GH Squads job is to support the Wolf Lord and retuine, which is already good at close combate. As for HEavy Support, Im already planning to get (2x)Long Fang Packs w/Pack leader and (4x) missel launchers each. I do agree that giving GH BP is a waste because whats the point of them being a support unit. I also plan to get (6x)Scouts,(1x) Rune Priest, (1x)Venerable Dreadnought. the list adds up to around 1999 points and you can see it at the Space Marine Army Lists.CHEERS!!
Oboy i've been waiting to answer this question forEVER! In my 2000 point army, I had 2 sqauds of blood claws in rhino's w/ smoke. My 1 sqaud of grey hunters sat back and had a kind of 'Make sure none of them bastards touch are big cool lookin tanks' kinda job and beleive me it works. Im at 58 wins, 20 ties, and 2 losses, it all depends on how you play your game. I won't discuss tactics (cept for my rhinos hiding behind my lovely landraidor w/ a runepriest and 4 CC termies in it ) I generally love blood claws more then GH due to their attacks and the fact that they kick major *ss. If you have the points though, 15 Blood claws in a LRC is the nastiest thing I've done to my IG/nid friends yet .
I'm a fan of the GH over the bloodclaws.
they have different roles on the battlefield. A good SW player will have a mix of units for different situations.
I find GH work best behind the bloodclaw, laying down fire and thinning out the ranks of the enemy before the bloodclaws hit.

The "A Smart Player Will..." theory is a complete paradox. If we make an assumption that everything we do is outsmarted, then theoretically we can never win.
