hey guys havnt played in about 5 years so realy have no exp of playing and just wondered which would be better and why
1. 10 man vet squad
- vet sgt power weapon, storm bolter,(both master crafted), carpace armor and honorfifica imperialis
- 3 meltaguns
- vox caster
- and all others with close combat weapon plus las pistol
-drop troops doctorine
( therefor this squad will basicly be an assulting squad, which deep strikes and either destroys a tank or sum troops) ive been told how ever tht ig are crap in close combat so even with an extra attack for the guyts with 2 weapons and the sgt having the hon imp would this be any good. and if not what would make them better for cc cus i like the thought of sum hardened fighters mashing it up in cc
2. 10 man vet squad
-vet sgt storm bolter
-3 plasma guns or 2 grenade launchers cus im scared of the plama guns killing myown men
- all others armed with lasguns
which one do you rekon would be best and if neither give me a set up which wud be better
also after reading some posts people seem to say that its best to keep the officer from the command squad out of the way but if hes got 3 wounds 3 attacks and if you give him sum beefy c and c weapons and carpace armor wouldnt he kik sum ass in cc
cheers for any help
I would definitely go with the meltagun squad as I think it it the best combo. In games I take 1 or 2 Hardened Veteran squads equipped w/ 3 meltaguns and the rest w/ CC weapons. I deepstrike them using the Drop TRoops doctrine so they can meet the enemy quick, appear next to annoying vehicles and pop 'em or just harass a particular unit. My fav. squad which I sometimes use is 10 vets, 3 meltaguns, rest w/ CC weapons, Vet Sergeant w/ power fist and Honorifica- this squad, when used appropriately can be very effective.
As a shooty army the IG rely a lot on holding a steady firing line. When troops get in CC you want them to hold up as long as they can so the rest of your troops can keep shooting, what the IG is best at. Command Squads are very good at CC but it is important to keep up a vox system by keeping the commander alive. Vet Squads can be just as effective in CC as I showed above.
cheers for that m8 sounds like sound advise
Personnally i use both varieties in my army, except, that i would use the sergeant combination previously mentioned over yours (power fist and HI), as the extra strength is invaluable, and you dont really want to be spending more points than this on a single model in an IG army. Don't take carapace, as against most CC foes it wont make the slightest bit of differance.
Also i would suggest dropping CCW and las pistols in favour of shotguns, your over-all attacks per turn will stay the same, as with CCW and las, you would get 1 shot, then 3 assault attacks, whearas with shotguns you get 2 shots then 2 assault attacks. Shooting is better for vets as they will hit on 3's instead of 4's, and will not have to strike in that this second attack does not have to be in initiative order (as many foes are ws4).
Finally, i do not deepstrike, i find that infiltrate gets me close enough to do some melting and with a lot less risk (no scattering off the board or into units), while also not requiring a doctine.
If you go for a ranged unit i would suggest 3 plasma guns and a lascannon, and stick them in cover, this unit can deal out allot of good AP pain at a decent range, while also taking care of medium to heavy vehicles quite effectively, and if combined with the camoleoline doctrine, they can be extremely survivable as well.
Hope this helped!!

I'm in the position of having used almost identical squads (I use cameleoline, and not drop troops) in my army. I have found that option 2 is the better choice. When I used the first squad I was never able to earn my points back, however with the second one I usually manage to either make more than my units points back or draw enough fire to keep the rest of my army intact for a few turns. Also, don't fear the plasma, it's not really as dangerous as it's made out to be; sure you'll lose guys to it sometimes but they'll usually still kill enough to make back their points.
I also agree with all of Crispin's comments on the first squad option.

You're spending 30 points on master crafted weps for choice 1! That's way too much. In fact, I wouldn't ever use master crafted because it's just not worth it IMO.

3 plsama guns and a plsama pistol fireing 8 bs4 ap2 shots at any marine squad and you have a good shot at killing them all in one round of shooting and if not then whoever is left will waste
a turn shooting back or getting in to close combat but i wouldnt have thought there would be many of the enemy left.
Thats if you have the points as in lower point games it may be better to give them a lascannon and a few plasma guns and sit them in cover somewere as you dont want to lose your vet squad
if you dont have a lot of manpower left if there not in your line at the start of the game.
