I am painting two 6 man strong IST squads which should make my WH army go over 2000pts mark. I was reading several posts here about them (and the fact that they are inferior to SoBs in many aspects) and their general roles (2 Plasmas, or 2 Meltas support). Most think that 5-6 models in one squads are the best. Very few people, if anyone at all, recommended adding a Sergeant to the sqad.
Since I have the model, and like the pose and general look of it, I was going to paint/model it anyway. Flufiness is also a factor for me So here I am, thinking of what the best gear would be to sculpt on him. I have two designs (and parts) in my mind:
Hellpistol (Hellgun - the one on the model can be both I think) with a Brazier of Holy Fire: Given that ISTs are not CC unit, they might get close enough to use the flamer template (especially in CoD maps), which doubles as a CCW and does not cost too much anyway
Bolter-Plasma combi gun with a CCW: Gun costs as much as a Plasma Pistol, but gives you more range and one turn of 6 Plasma shots*. If you do enough damage you might survive, even the return charge. If not you probably were rolling badly and even a Holly-Staff-of-Holly-Wraith would not help you either  And you get a "free" bolter too
What I do not see as a good upgrade is the usual Book of St. Lucius - the stats on the Veteran are too low for it to be effective. Purity Seals would probably be a better choice...
What do you think is worth taking? Both setups listed above should come to 30-35 points.
* 6 Plasma shots if counting 4 from the rest of the squad.

BoSL is a moot point anyway as they're Sisters only kit. The triple plasma choice sounds interesting. Often in 40K one turns shooting will do the business (so long as the dice don't turn on you), and this has the good point of unity of weaponry. 6-man squads of ISTs often don't survive for long enough to make sustained shooting much of a concern anyway.
Any ideas for modelling such a thing though? Commander Azrael of the Dark Angels has a nice combi bolter-plasmagun which is actually a separate component, so is only £1.25.
WIP: Please, the heretics are closing in, I need some firepower here!
That part is a UK-only item (very nice find)! Would be crazy to order one bit from overseas though. I will probably cut up a plasma pistol and add it to the existing weapon, as well as change the barell and add an ammo box on the bottom... Don't know yet
I sometimes use a vet in a melta squad but prefer an Inquisitor and retenue for plasma. For 5 points less than 6 IST with 2 plasma guns and a vet with combi plasma you can get...
3 Veteran Guardsmen with plasma guns
That's 6 plasma gun shots every turn and a re-roll on one miss.
Very interesting option indeed! I guess I could get one more Plasma model and have the option to use them this way too (plus you could put same gear on =][= for 8 Plasma Shots :w00t: Anyhow, I am going with the Plasma-Bolter combo on this guy

I care not for effectiveness half the time when it comes to Inquisital Storm Troopers in Kaskrin form.....the models look soooo cool, it makes me want to feild an army of just them
Anyways I would go or a plasma pistol for fluff and rules wise. A pistol is special gear that represents officer rank (like these days, though I think we still give squad sergants their weaponary as I don;t think they count as officers yet but meh...), but this is due to the fact these guys arn't meant to fight, just self protection if needed. Also you gain 3 attacks when combining pistol and combat weapon.
Get this though, I don't actually think that Inquisital Storm trooper Vet. Sergants are allowed hellpistols. Looking at them it only says that they can be given equipement in the witch hunter wargear where the hell pistol is not present. Unlike Battle sisters it does not say he can replace his hellgun with a hell pistol and combat weapon o.o Strange huh? Also means you have to pay that extra 2 points to give him a combat weapon and bolt pistol. If you're like me though, I ignor the fact that hell pistols arn't there and pay 1pt for one anyways. ^^
How about a BOlter and Bolt Pistol? 3 points.
The Bolter-Flamer COMbi seems to be a good plan.
Small IST squads work very well in Cities of Death Rules.
THey can deliver flamer templates at a very low risk and cost. A third flamer isn't a bad consideration, because the bolter is a nice improvement over the hellgun.
I don't like the risk that Plasma Poses to Vet Sargents.
The non-targetability of the Vet Sarge in CC is a bad thing to lose.
I confine plas pistols to Cannonesses (prefered) and Inquisitors.
(I do find I am using plas pistols more in CoD)
You could make him a DH IST Vet, and he may take a Bolter-Needle Pistol. Or, he could take a Thunder Hammer, which is a very interesting idea, should there be any monstrous creatures on the table. This one-handed weapon will effectively tie the monster up in CC for a turn. That's meeting a very tall order with just 25 points on a lousy IST sarge. It will be completley unexpected. In fact, the Thunder Hammer is a ONE handed weapon, so you can still take another weapon.
But if you do use the Thunder-Hammer in CC against some monster, you need to make sure you have more ISTs in his killzone than he can actually kill.
I think I'll use one next I lay Nids. (Now where's my glue?)
Sisters Repentia: Wow what beautiful models! Wow what terrible rules! -stjohn70
smokey: you could always use the SM commander sprue for the combi-plasma. it comes with lots of nice lil extras too... like a power fist, lightning claw, combi-melta, plasma pistol, rozarius... you get the picture lol
just me 2 cents worth

RedZinfandel - always when I think that I have things figured out you come in with a new, interesting idea and put me at square one! Thunder Hammer, huh :shifty:
