This may technically need to be on the conversion page, but I get more feedback over here. I just posted a thread about rough riders, and it seems that on this site and also with everyone I talk to that everyone loves the rough riders and hates the models. I wanted to share my alternate model idea that I have only one squad of so far:
I have a "assault squad" of cadians sporting the Forge World grav-chutes for the Elysians. Each model has a laspistol and a shock-maul from the old Arbites range. I call them "grav-packs" as the Imperial Guard version of the Space Marines jump packs. The models fit with my cadian army and the conversion is easy and cheap (Battlewagonbits.com).
I also have a squad of the lizard riders on cold ones, but I like the grav pack guys better. What else has anyone else used?
"No dumb bastard ever won a war by dying for his country. You win a war by making the other dumb bastard die for his country." General George S. Patton, Jr.
Personally, I'd rather have my riders sitting on a mount. Giving them jump packs seems like taking the easy way out and it isn't very fluffy seing as jump pack technology is supposed to be rare - too rare for distribution amongst guardsmen atleast.
Also, since one's not allowed to reduce the size of a models base, you'd have to fit the jump pack guys on a cavalry or bike base, which I think would look rather odd when there's just a guardsman standing there.
But people looking for ideas should check out this article on the GW site for some great looking modernised rough riders, though as always when it comes to GW conversion guides, it's pricey, but stealing ideas and coming up with a cheaper alternative yourself doesn't cost a thing. :>
Be careful- Jump packs confer a very different movement type than cavalry. Not very WYSIWYG, and you might confuse your opponents.
That being said, it's a pretty creative idea. I could see guardsmen carrying around a 1-use jump jet thing for the final charge into CC.
If it were me, I'd focus on taking the normal Rough Riders and adding the sci-fi to those models. First, replacing the freaky attilans-the-huns torsos with Cadians or Tallarns. Second, I think it would be fun to ad cyber-enhancements on the horses. They need it more than the riders, right?
@ Kaiser: Those RR bikers are wonderful. The Konversion Klinik has got to be the most fun part of the UK site
i think the most commen placement of sci-fi rough riders is to use cold ones.
The bike idea is a good one and looks quite nice though if you could find other bikes it would be alot cheaper. Check other modeling stores particuarly ones that specialise in WW2 ranges which would look quite good.
WELL SAID, NO MORE SQUATS THEY ARE DEAD GET OVER ITOriginally Posted by artificer
The problem with using bikes is the same issue as jump packs, the rules for bikes are very different from cavalry. Additionally, the conversion on the GW site isn't bad, but requires alot of pricey parts that there are few alternatives to. I find using an actual beast works best and the cold ones add a suitable Sci-Fi feel. The only problem of course is that cadians weren't meant to ride beasts and the newer cold ones weren't meant to be ridden by humans, so it takes a little work.
Blais's Paint Studio-Getting broken armies good soft scores since 2009
I used these
for my Roughriders, but then I'm fielding a Squat based IG company (they're equipped as guard, they have guard tanks, but every single guardsman is a Squat) and it seemed somehow fitting to have my roughriders charging into battle on Rams.
A little bit of snipping here and there - a las pistol and melta or two and they were good to go. Not tourney legal, but then my entire army isn't technically tourney legal ('cept the tanks). Good job I only play friendlies.
That said, the prices aren't too bad on the West Wind Miniatures site and the orc wolf riders might also serve. http://www.westwindproductions.co.uk...ges/dw-304.jpg
