Ok, I need some guidance, here. As of a month ago, I have been easing back into the fold of Warhammer 40k after a 2 year hiatus (of sorts). One of the armies I plan on fielding is the Dark Angels, a force that I always wanted to field in the past. Their dark, monastic theme appeals to me immensely.
But they've gotten the shaft upon the release of the new 4th edition rules, I see. I hear that their Deathwing terminators (for goodness' sake) are now just little more than more expensive versions of standard ones.
Their new codex and some new models, if rumor can be trusted, are coming out early next year, but I don't know if I can wait that long. I am eager to begin painting and playing. Traits armies don't interest me. I've played Blood Angels before and the wait for their update is even longer! Raven Guard is too similar to the Alpha Legion I am going to play. Space Wolves got a similar screwing over, what with their leaders not getting the boost of the new HQ abilities (and they don't have deep striking termies or assault squads!) I am not interested in creating my own Chapter w/ traits. So this pretty much leaves me with my Dark Angels.
What do you recommend that I do? Should I still try to play with them, with the old codex? It's not that expensive. Should I build a similar army and use traits rules, but with the DA paint scheme and conversions? I wonder if that would fly, but probably won't since they have a codex and FAQ.
So I must be in a situation, here. Any help would be much appreciated! Maybe I just need to cut the possibility of traits more slack. But I find the idea of creating my own marine chapter kind of cheesy, at first glance.
So, yeah. What do you think?
You're right, they did get shafted when 4th ed. came out. But...
I'd have to say, play them now. Get started so you can get a feel for their style of play.
Simply jumping into a new army without a little practice seems foolish to me. Give 'em a try and get some games in. You can't beat experience.
I wouldn't say that Dark Angels became any weaker after the new Codex release. They just didn't get much better, either.
I'd say that you should just play the Dark Angels anyway. They're still a fairly good army, and almost impossible to shift from a position once they've decided that they want to stay. Don't let a few disadvantages hold you back - get in there and show the enemies of the Emperor just who they're messing with!
Unless your playing in a tournament, there is nothing that says you cannot do both, for a little variety. Just because your guys are painted like DA, they ARE still Space Marines, and you always have the option of playing a trait army if you just want some variety. I would say play DA, and since you will need the 4th ed SM codex anyway, don't be afraid to play with the traights if you see some that spark your interest.
This is true but I Miss being the only one with Plasma Cannons in Tac Squads :cry:Originally Posted by Firedrake28

"They shall all taste OBLIVION!,.....which tastes like Red Bull, which is disgusting."
I'd stick with them. They get upgraded after the current eldar revamp, like in february, new codex & the works ala BT. My friend is giddy with anticipation.

"The world will be a better place when the world's resources are used for Giant Robots."
Sucks that they don't use veterans.... I kinda like them in the new codex even if they can be tough to use well. I wonder what they will get in the new codex. Hopefully something involving their plasma weapons. :shifty:
Theres no real reason to play with the dark angles codex unless you field a lot of the following:
C) Static shooty infantry squads
Now, if you want a FA heavy army, DA are great.
If you want to sit and shoot, DA are ok at that - but trait marines are better.
If you want to be assaulty, dont bother with dark angles.
Just do what you want man, play em if ya feel the urge and just do a nice little revamp when the new stuff comes out.

Erm... what about fluff? What about models? What about the Deathwing?Originally Posted by ForgedInTheFurnaceOfWar
