Hello everyone! This is my first post, so I ought to say a nice "Hello!" before I start bombarding everyone with idiotic questions.
I've been interested in 40k for a long time, and seeing as how I have a GW Battle Bunker right next to me, I decided to go buy something. I drove down with a friend, and we got the Macragge set. He already knew he wanted Tyranid, and I already knew I wanted DH. So, anyways, I don't want to give you a history lecture, so let me get to the point.
The Macragge set comes with (as you know) 10 Space Marines (or so; I can't quite remember). The guy at the Bunker was like "Oh, you want Grey Knights?" so he just threw the Boltgun Metallic, Mithril Silver, Chaos Black, Skull White, and Blue Dye up on the counter. He walked me through painting one (sort of) so it looked kind of like the Knight in the DH codex.
What I want to know is, even though it's a Space Marine, can it be considered a PAGK when I play? I've never played a real game before, so I'm not too sure how it all works out. Any information would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.
i don't really know how to answer the question without being slapped, or
something. the marines are not equipped withthe appropriate weaponry, so no, but then again, they could be used as proxies by a non WYSIWYG-anal opponent. so, it is a yes and no answer. find someone to play against that will let you, or buy some figs that are WYSIWYG.
or you could use them as allies when you get a DH army, and say that your DH also allows regular SM's to repaint their armor with the armor colors of the DH, i dunno, you decide.
Hrm. That sorta sucks. The GW guy sort of mislead me on that note. Anyways, it's no big deal. I'll be buying a bunch of troop units and termies throughout the course of the month, so it's cool.
Thanks for the info.
Yeah, it is kinda annoying that way.
If I were you, I wouldn't even paint the Space Marines (SM) except to hone your painting skills or to test a scheme. Simply glue them up and use them to learn the rules and/or as proxies. When you get your Grey Knights (GK) make sure you have some Superglue and some Green Stuff (GS[Epoxy putty]).
Welcome to the Grey Knights, we have lots of knowledgable members here *cough*, some who are just tactically smart, *cough* some who enjoy having fun with the game but are still pretty smart *cough* and some who are just damned crazy! *cough*
Wow, must have a sore throat or something... <.<;;;
PS: While you may have some how got the impression I'm so incredibly awsome, I will confess that I have yet to play Grey Knights (GK) over 1000 points, but I do have lots of time to think so it kinda balances out.
PPS: By now you must have noticed that my Avatar is an Orange Grey Knight, and your no fool, all my GKs will be orange!

Gee, that sounds familiar. An employee at my local game shop tried to convince me to buy a Macragge set when I asked him for a 40k rule book. I told him that I already had chosen my army (DH and WH) and purchased a lot of models. He gave me a puzzled look and still insisted the set was the way to go. I ended up walking away and buying the book at another store. That hobby shop is still the best one in the region, but I stay clear of that employee.Originally Posted by rattler
Yeah. That same guy told me today in the store that I could just buy 10 SMs in power armor, and play them as GKs, instead of buying the box of 5 PAGKs for twice as much. Is that true?
EDIT: Are there any good websites having good resources on DH/GK? I've googled for something similar to "The Waaagh" but for DH, to no avail.

Not at all. Extremely different weaponry between GK and SM. And Warhammer *does* have a rule where you *must* field models that accurately represent what their rules are (as in, you MUST field models with the appropriate weapons, armor, and wargear). Unless you feel like doing massive conversion work on ever model, don't try and use SM as GK.Originally Posted by rattlerNot that I'm aware of. And whats better than here? Not only do we have a Great base of DH/GK Vets, we also have the rest of the forum and you can 'spy' on the enemy, like some say; "know thy enemy" and its very true, for while I have not played many games with GK, I know many armies very well and thus can deduce basic and even more complicated tactics to use against them.Originally Posted by mEGALOMANIAC

Awesome. I suppose I'm sticking with GKs then. I just love the fluff and details of all of the models. I have a million more questions to ask, but I don't necessarily want to use the forums as a chat client.
I'm sure I'll be bugging you really soon with my newb questions though. Thanks for everything.
