*At first glance, this thread belongs in the fluff section, but there are army construction questions I have, as well... Justifying its place here. Look for an army list very soon!
I am brainstorming a traits army, but don't want to completely invent a chapter from scratch. I was thinking of smaller chapters that had caught my eye and remembered the Scythes of the Emperor. I researched them a bit, but material is limited... Here is some of what I discovered from Wikipedia...This is a good start, but I seek more material.Adeptus Astartes Chapter 874, the Scythes of the Emperor were founded at some point during the middle of the 41st millennium. Their gene-stock is speculated to have come from the Ultramarines. The Scythes served during the Damocles Gulf Crusade, and played a vital role in the capture of Sy'l'kell from the Tau Empire. However, the crusade stalled and withdrew when it was learned that the newly-discovered Tyranids were heading for Ultramar, home of the Ultramarines.
After the Badab War, the Scythes were charged to watch over the Lamenters, who were performing a crusade of penance for their role in the rebellion. They continued in this role until the final years of the 41st millennium, when the chapter's homeworld was attacked and destroyed by Hive Fleet Kraken. The Scythes are presumed destroyed with their homeworld, but rumours indicate that a small number of survivors may be active and are pursuing splinters of Kraken.
The armour of the Scythes of the Emperor is black and yellow, with crossed yellow scythes depicted on the shoulder panels.
Upon reading this, I immediately thought of a squad of battle scarred veterans, adorned with pieces of 'Nid exoskeleton and body plates on their armor. The chapter almost destroyed by the destruction of their planet, I imagine them being forced to master small unit tactics and making use of whatever is at hand, their resources stretched to the limit.
What traits/advantage/disadvantages do you think these guys would have? Suffer the Alien Not to Live (Nids) seems obvious, given their hatred of the cursed xenos, but what happens when I am not playing against Nids? That is a waste of a trait, isn't it? A preferred enemy would rock when I can use it, but does no good otherwise. That's worse than a terrible advantage.
Also, from their history, I figure their major disadvantage would be Flesh Over Steel or Aspire to Glory, reflecting their heavy losses from Kraken. Their other advantage and minor drawback, I am having trouble figuring out. Keep in mind that I haven't settled on the preferred enemy, even though it would make sense, fluff wise.
So what do you guys think? Any suggestions would be more than welcome. Tell me what would work with these guys? I want to be fluffy, yet make a good tactical combo of traits.
I've always had a bit of a soft spot for the scythes myself and have though tabout making an army of them as well.
as this guy has laid out the history of the chapter (which seems accurate enough) and chosen some traits to represent his army. Personally i'd go with uphold the honour of the emperor or never despair, or maybe cleanse and purify to reflect the more mobile guerrilla warfare approach over the suffer not the alien to live that he chose, seeing they still sound fluffy but don't cost any points.
Personally, if your going to be playing them as YOUR army don't worry abotu the Preferred enemy thing. But if you are playing themt o be the Sycthes, then take the prefferred Tyranid trait. Its upt o whether your a fluff gamer or not. Second? Hmmm... I'd say See but don't be seen to actualyl give some creedance to Guerilla Warfare. Your definatly right about aspire ot glory being a disadvantage, same with flesh over steel.
Another that might go well is Trust Your Battle Brothers. Indicating the Experience the veterans have of how it is to fight the 'nids. How important iot is to be good at CC and Shooting, and it will also give you fewer, but more flexible troops to mirrir the depleted status of the chapter.

Yes, but please post it seperatly in the Army list forum, and link it in this thread if you wish, but army list discussion, in that part of the forum.

I am playing Lamenters, so welcome brother.
I painted them grey instead of yellow because I play them during their penitent crusade. And I decided that they repainted their armor to show their status.
technically after running into the Kraken you could possibly give them all kinds of traits, but perosnnaly I never wanted to spend the points and play them Vanilla flavor.
I guess the same thing applies to the Scythes.
Shut up and play.
The Scythes was a good website. A good history.
I would like to make use of Terminators and Veterans (modelling them like Tyrannic War Veterans).
I have decided upon Trust Your Battle Brothers as one of my traits, but have not settled upon the other one. Eye to Eye will be my major disadvantage. I don't know if I am going to go with See But Don't Be Seen for the final advantage... Cleanse and Purify is kinda cool, but better for assaulting, I'd think, and that's counterproductive to True Grit from TYBB, isn't it?
Sigh. I am still torn.
