I've never played a game of warhammer 40k, but I am planning one offcourse. I would like to collect a Salamander army and start with a total points of 500. I am planning on buying a box with the rhino and stuff. Is this a good start?
Do you mean the battleforce box, or just the Rhino box.
For a beginer I would reccomend the battleforce box set. It gives you most of the components you'll need to begin a good force(1rhino, 1 tac squad, 1 com squad, 1 5man ass. squad, and 1 5man scout squad) Add a basic HQ model and you'll be rockin in no time, regardless of what chapter you want to use.
Salamanders like to use flamethrowers and meltaguns alot, so keep that in mind when building the units.

I have never used my Rhino, except my first game or two.
My advice would be to get the Megaforce box if you can still find one. They are more expensive, but have a lot more stuff, and is a better value, but for some reason, GW stopped putting them together about 2 months ago, but if you look I'm sure you can find someone that still has one.
But if you can't, the battle box is a decent value, and will give you a good feel for the game.
well, you have two options. first, you could buy the battleforce and base your army list around it. this would probably be the cheapest/ most headache free way of starting out.
however, if you want to make your army more unique, you could write up a 500pt list. you could post it in the space marine army list section and other LO members will comment and help you perfect the list.
