Welcome to Librarium Online!
Good Day Captains of the Imperium,
I am a novice player who with two other friends have just started into Warhammer. One actually is returning and a veteran player and with that fore shadowing I start with my question.
In designing my army I am not sure what to add to it. I have a combat squad and some scouts so I was thinking more towards either a Devastator squad of four guys two with plasma and the other two with heavy bolters putting them in a transport and than provide cover fire for my other units. I also thought that perhaps a Dreadnought might be better for the Tyranids would have trouble with the armour but it is the Tau player that concerns me more. So the other thought would be to have a Terminator squad but perhaps that is too costly in smaller point games such as 500 or 750.
I was going to have a Dark Angel army but really it could go anyway at this point. Your thoughts or suggestions are appreciated. Thanks
You really have to decide on an army before we can help a lot. What might be a good suggestion for DA would not be good for SW.
Your idea of the devastators in a transport doesn't work. Unless you take an army with open top transports (not marine) then you will only be able to shoot two of your heavy weapons max per round, wasting the rest of their firepower. You also can't move and shoot, so you waste the transport's mobility. A small devastator unit with a razorback can work, but the devastators don't ride in it, it just adds more firepower without taking a force organization slot.
You also need to get an HQ guy. A miniature that can fill in for various commander roles is a good choice.
Assuming Dark Angels, you need more Tac squads. You'll need two (troop choices) minimum to field a legal army. I would get plasma cannons in the Tac squads, since they're cheaper, and get missile launchers on the devastator squad.
A Predator or whirlwind is always a good all around heavy support choice for just about any army.
I already have two squads of troops there and was wondering as to a next step from there. I would say that it is a Dark Angel army but since it is still being formed it is not like I am set for it to just be Dark Angel if someone was to list a better tactical choice though I think that all marine stuff is almost exactly the same
On another note which of the tanks would be better to field against Tau and Tyranids? Whirlwind or Predator
Actually, a Predator Destructor (the Autocannon one) with HB sponsons is a good choice too. It comes down to points, and how good your guess hits are.
a preditor is a safe bet for developement. Although you have to pick a style in my opinion. Some people go streight for plasma cannon heavy weapon teams, but people like me are both a tred head and a troop lover. I have as many troops as I can, and as many tanks as I can! (65 space marines, a landraider, 2 preditors and 6 rhinos)
I think that still leaves the question of elites. If a squad of Terminators are to expensive for smaller point games against a swarm army. Though the same could probly be argue with the Dreadnought but I think the armour is what would help. Than the Tau the Terminators are perhaps better due to their heavier weapons.
Overall I argue both sides and end up in a stalemate within myself.
Ender it's as Wolfraider said, you have to decide on an army before advice. However here are some points that might help you choose between the chapters:
The Ultramarines : Standard as all hell but have cheap armoury and the use of Veteran Tactical Squads. Mind you also some powerful hero's thanks to Chapter Approved.
The Dark Angels : Very Gun focused army, love to throw Plasma Cannons into Tactical Squads and take long walks on the beach.... Kidding. But the Ravenwing and Deathwing lead to some very interesting possibilities. All Deathwing Army (17 Terminators vs Orks on a cleanse... aaaahhh). Anyway.....
The Blood Angels : I would have to say the Self Professed masters of HtH, and the Death Company as hampering as it is, scares the ***** out of me sometimes. And Dante is the only Chapter Master with a Jetpack, thats cool.
The Space Wolves : Lots of different stuff in the Wolves like Counter Attacking, Choosing Targets for Dev's and Venerable Drednaught HQ's. Very interesting indeed.
The Black Templars : I really dont know alot about these boys, but from what i hear they are fairly shooty, with good HtH bonuses. Plus cant forget the Emperor's Champion.
The Salamanders : Really cheap weaponry i believe as they are all like techmarines or something, but from what i hear also have Initiative 3 ... no thanks.
The White Scars : Again I dont know alot about them, but I hear they easily match the Dark Angels Ravenwing in Bike and Speeder skill, Army is pretty much mobile if i am correct.
And then you have your assortment of other chapters that have no real descernable difference from the Standard Marine Layout. Chapters including The Imperial Fists and others.
*slap Invicticus* (I just love doing that)
BT's aren't shooty. They are all about cc. You can make good 5 man shooty squads but they are all about the cc.
<(^^)> <(^^<) (>^^)> ^(^^)^ Dance Kirby! Dance!
Damn Sanctus that hurt!!! but thanks, i didnt know about BT anyway.
