I've decided to bite the bullet and stop just eyeballing all those gorgeous WH and DH models and instead start on collecting some. I've also been eyeballing all those lovely heavy support choices that IG gets, so why not just give in to all of my inhibitions at once? Other than the cost, of course. x.x
The reason I'm picking up WH/DH is because they seem to convey the gothic look and feel of the game very well. Unfortunately, IG (and most of the rest of the game really) don't seem to do that very well. As such, I'm trying to keep the amount of guard I use to a minimum. Still, I don't want to shoot myself in the foot by missing out on some good options. I'm not looking for a list so much as I'm looking for units. Without telling you what else I'm using, I don't expect you to be able to give me much more than that. As I don't -know- what else I'll be using yet... I'll settle for what I can get for now.
My intent is to use IG as my parent list, and then sprinkle in WH/DH allies as appropriate. However, I've only played in a single game with a guard player so I'm not entirely sure where to start, although I have an idea.
I was intending on taking 1 Junior Officer w/ a heavy bolter team as my HQ, and then two infantry platoons consisting of another JO w/ HB, and two squads with a Lascannon team. On top of this, everybody's favorite IF Basilisk. I'm pretty sure all of those are fairly solid choices. I may also try out taking light infantry for infiltration and possibly sticking some plasma guns into the lascannon squads... although the plasma may easily just be wasted points.
What shooty units (...not really much of a restriction in the IG list ) really shine? I'm mostly looking for tank/MC-busting power. Sisters and an ordnance vehicle or two should give me plenty of crowd suppression. I intend on relying on GKs for close combat lovin'. What I really need from Guard (other than access to the ordnance ) is long range firepower and tank busting.
Thanks a lot.
You play your game, I'll play mine.
Long range Anti-Tank? Lascannons are your friend then, my friend. If you REALLY want some concentrated Anti-Tank firepower, a heavy weapons platoon with two Lascannon squads and a Missile squad will give you a nice hard core of anti-tank firepower. However, it takes up a Heavy Support option. For slightly less, but more versatility, you can fill your Command Platoon with two lascannon anti-tank squads and two auto-cannon firesupport squads. 6 S9 AP 2 Lascannon shots and 12 S7 AP4 autocannon shots will rip up any different kind of armor imaginiable.
Concentrated lascannons=very happy pie-plate wielding opponent.Originally Posted by GunTAG

I agree that you need AT firepower with your DH/WH. DH excel in anti troop, but have a real problem with any thing AV12+. They also don't have good Heavy Support options.
You will also need to meet all of your army requirements, therefore my reccomendation would look something like this:
Iron Discipline, Close Order Drill, Cameolelene.
HQ: Command squad with Autocannon, Plasma Gun, Iron Disicpline, Cameolelene.
If points allow - Lascannon HW squad.
Troops: Platoon Command: Same as above
Troops: 2 x Squad with Lascannon, Plasma Gun.
Armoured Fist Squad: Chimera(smoke) w/Lascannon, Plasma Gun.
Heavy Support: 1 or (two if points allow) Leman Russ, (Hull HB, Sponson HBs, Smoke)
This will give you some good AT fire to back up your Grey Knights or Sisters.
Add to the brew of Inquisition Destruction:rolleyes: : Seraphim, or Fast Attack Grey Knights and of course some GK Termies!
I play all three armies, and the best overall to win, would be an IG Parent list with Allied Grey Knights.

Remember, if you take a doctrine like Camoline or Carapace armor, you need to place it on EVERY squad that CAN take it.
Doctrines are only available to core Guard armies, when taking Guard as allies they don't have access to doctrines.Originally Posted by GunTAG
This would be using IG as the parent list, so doctrines would be available. I'd be tossing DH and WH forces in as allies. I end up having to take a somewhat lousy HQ choice going this route, but it's well worth it to open up the HS options.Originally Posted by Kaiser
Do people think using a Rhino chassis (instead of a Chimera or Leman Russ chassis) as a basis for tanks would be confusing? I was planning on using some of the armor plates off the Exorcist to 'goth-up' the tanks... but they're not going to fit properly on an IG frame. I'm thinking that I'll have an easier time converting turrets than I'll have trying to copy the Exorcist bits so that I can make them fit properly on the IG tanks. I seriously doubt that I'm talented enough to sculpt everything I'd want from scratch using green stuff.
