So I'm planning to attend a pretty competitive tourney up here in Minnesota (MGCON if any of you care) but I'm new to the area not mention really rusty at competitive tourney play and don't really know what the competitive lists are these days.
I know that Nids have the Zilla or the Warrior Archtypes, that theres the DS speeder list (though it got slight nerfed with GWs new faq) and then theres speed freak orks and Mech Tau.
I suppose what I am asking is not so much for army building advice (though thats always welcome) as much as what lists everyone's seeing at competitive tourneys.
Also as a means of introduction, I was once known on these boards as socprof but i've forgotten the password and the email account that was attached to doesn't exist anymore. So hi again to you all, especially you triumph
well, here's a few i saw:
iron warriors: 2 predator destructor and 1 vindicator (all with upgrades so they have 14 armorvalue in front and ignore stunned and shaken), 3 cyborcs, 1 vet. squad with LC, demon prince with unholy speed and S8 and 3 troop squads each with chaos brute.
nids zilla army: 6 carnifexes (3 with T7 W4 and regenerate) 2 hyve tyrants, one winged. 2 squads of gaunts, 8 each squad. 3 venators. carnifexes have re-roll to hit and to wound.
i can't remember the rest, though there are things like a dark eldar lord with 2+ invulnerable save and warpportal able to warp 3 talons.

unfortunatly i only know the german notions, but "cyborcs" are the chaos units that can morph weapons and "venators" a fast attack choice of the nids, the new models kinda look like the nid warriors.
Cyborkcs would be the obliterators and venerators are ravenors. Microcosm, remember that all DE players with half a brain or that don't play with fluff field an HQ with a +2 invulnerable.
Theres also the true grit/counter attack dual plasma drop pod list for marines, or the mock blooad angels list of six assault squads led by two chaplains with jump packs. (Fluffwise I hate that one except when done by Raven Gaurd players because they won't field chaplains...)

Also just to make this clear, I'm more interesting in the "shop" talk ya'll've heard about that "killer" nid/ork/whatever tourney list.
Again Don't get out much to a local store as the closest is 50 miles away and just curious what most people are running into.
hearing people in local stores talking about lists is better than actualy experiance them on a tournament...?
I'm at a new school now and the closest Local Game store is 55 miles away.
Not much chance to hear discussion about lists.
Nor to get a feel of who is bringing what.
I'm not looking to "tech" or meta-game against 1 list but I want to field a strong all-comers list.
So I'm just trying to get a general sense of what's being played at a competitive level.
well, a major IG army type is static. Basically lots of heavies, just sit and shoot. There is also grenadiers which is a more mobile type, usually with chimeras. I assume that this is what you want to know.
BURN THE HERETIC!
KILL THE MUTANT!
PURGE THE UNCLEAN!
The light at the end of the tunnel is an incoming freight train.
No, not exactly.
Rather, what are the major opponents I'll face.
The odds are the most threatening IG force would be a Mech Guard but likeley there'll be a SAFH army show-up.
