Hi everyone, Just to let you know i've been playing now for about 2 1/2 years (mostly marines) and i want to start a new army and i thought IG cause i like the tanks and how cheap normal guy's are. So i was wonderin if this was a good startin point for an army?
I thought about gettin 2 of the battle force sets, a basilisk and the hq command box This will come to £140 and i will get:
HQ comand (6 models)
40 normal guy's
6 hv wepon teams
2 Leman russ
and two 40k chaples
What do you think?
and what do you think i should get next?
Thanks for any help Ike36
Dnt judge my judgments plz
Its not my fault, blame some other guy
First Thing You Should Get is a codex!!!
You'll need to get at least 1 more box of infantry. The troop units for imperial guard are infantry platoons.
Those consist of a mandatory 5 man platoon command squad, and between 2-5 full 10 man squads. If you go with the minimum troops, then that'll be 50 guardsmen, just to fill out your mandatory 2 troop units. Unless you use armored fist squads, but then you'll need to get Chimeras.
I'd get more infantry first, before you got the basilisk. The tanks are awesome, but the real strength of the imperial guard, is the amount of heavy and special weapons. Leman Russes, are very tough, so they're great at taking fire away from your troops.
I'd say your 2 battleforce boxes are fine, but you shouldn't get the basilisk right away, and instead, get 40 more infantry. That way, you have very good infantry support for your tanks.
After you have plenty of infantry, then the basilisk might be cool. Also, if you play against Non MEQ armies, then consider a hellhound tank, those things are very mean against stuff, that has a 4+ save or worse. Sentinels can be decent scout unit, can harass the enemy, and is a good scoring unit, for recon type games.
MacGyver = Crushing Victory
i'd say, go for the bassie but instead of the hq box get a box of troops, as you can convert every member of the hq box easily.
and nobody said you have to use the guys from the heavyweapon squads for heavyweapon squads.
you'd have a total of 75 guys:
20 (troop box)
40 (troops in battle force boxes)
12 (heavyweapon squad guys in b.f. boxes)
3 (tank sprues)
so you could do something like this:
Hq, troop I (5)
squad I.1. (10)
aquad I.2 (10)
Hq, troop II (5)
squad II.1. (10)
squad II.2 (10)
squad II.3 (10)
veterans ( 5)
plasmaguns can be done by useing spacemarine plasmapistols and bolters (or lasguns instead), melters can be converted out of a flamer, grenade launchers and flamers come with the box sets.
and you can get 5 different weapons out of the heavyweapon box, so you could take for example 6 LC and a couple of heavybolters.
I think you should also get elites, such as ratlings because they hit on a 2+ and wound on a 4+.
Thats firepower when you need to take big guys out. The good thing also, is that there cheap!
Stormtroopers are good for the equipement they can have (+ have carapace armour, very useful for 5+ guards!). Veterans are good for the amount of special weapons they can have (3 + 1 hv weapon) and ogryns for hand to hand combat (as guards usually end up as toast near the end of the battle. Tecnaugures are good if you are going to field lots of armour.
But then, the choice is yours!!!
Personally i favour the horde Imp guard,
no special weapons
no flamers or anything like that.
Cheap HQs, so what if a sqaud runs away this isnt fantasy the others will merely shrug thier shoulders and keep shooting.
just line after line of guardsmen and then a few heavy weapon team. Maybe use a cheap russ as a fire magnet, everyones scared of russes
WELL SAID, NO MORE SQUATS THEY ARE DEAD GET OVER ITOriginally Posted by artificer

But horde guard should also take advantage of the dedicated HW squad available for "free" (ie no doctrine needed) in the HQ platoon.
But horde guard really really really really lacks tourney staying pwer becuase it fails to have enough mobilitiy to capture objectives and what not.
