So, I've got my Ultramarines pretty much at a point where I'm looking for some variety and Allies sound like a good way to do it.
To my knowledge that means either adding Demonhunters or Witchhunters, not sure if there are rules for taking IG (if there are I'd definitely be interested in them as well).
So here's the question, before I start going out and buying additional codices,
does anyone have any suggestions for what works well?
As a daemonhunter player I think you should go into the daemonhunter forun and check out our tactica. It does a better job of explaining every unit than I could do. There is also a FAQ on how to ally so you can get all of those questions answered.
In short however I would say ally with whichhunters if you want more shooting and more bodies. Take on some Grey Knights if you think you need help finishing your enemies off in the assault phase. (If you use scouts, you have a quick way to get some hard hitting units up close to the enemy very quickly and safely)

You're limited to using Daemonhunters or Witch Hunters (no IG, sorry).
I honestly don't think that SM armies benefit too much from using either of those as allies. You already have strong ranged fire, and can hold your own in a fight - the two things that WH/DH can do. Allied units wouldn't be a waste, just not necessary.
Meglomaniac, I didn't really see them as necesary, just a reason to paint something other than blue, without dropping all the benefits of my current race.
I wasn't able to see a .sig on your post either, but I'll do some more searches.
nichodemus10, I've read around on the Demonhunters and Witch Hunters forums a bit but was trying to go for something a bit more comparative and from the perspective of someone truely undecided. Your overview of "WH more shooty", "DH more assualty" actually helped me frame them a bit better.

I'm with mEGALOMANIAC, on this one.
While, yes, you can take GK/ SoB, Marines really don't need them. What they could possibly benefit from are, say, Arco Flagellants or Death Cult Assassins. Cheap and effective CC monsters.
The allies system seems more oriented to have the Marines or Guard complement the ]I[, rather than the other way around.
