I played against this IG guy yesterday in a 1000 point game, and he claimed to be using Steel Legion. His army list consisted of 4 squads of infantries (not platoons) with a lascannon in each squad, 1 command squad with heroic senior officer and claimed that every retinue in the squad has 2 wounds (he said they are veterans ?!?!) and two of them are holding power weapons, 1 basilisk, 1 lemen russ w/ lascannon, 1 demolisher w/ plasma cannon..
The guy whome I played was suppose to be a 'veteran player' in that particular independent retailer store, and I thought something was fishy but I didnt want to embarrase myself so I didnt say anything and played it on. Can anyone tell me that his list is legit or not?
*forgot to add that he has the Sharpshooter doctrine on all of his units INCLUDING TANKS.. Harden Veteran and Carapace Armour.*

Anima Tactics - try it out!
when in doubt always ask,
I dont know much steel legion, however most of it seems legal except for the two wound veterans, maybe steel legions vets do have two wounds but i doubt it very much,
other players may be able to help you more than i can
WELL SAID, NO MORE SQUATS THEY ARE DEAD GET OVER ITOriginally Posted by artificer
As far as I know, the Steel Legion isn't some kind of special army. Don't remember them all of the top of my head, but towards the back of the codex there's that big list of famous guard regiments and the doctrines used to describe them- they're in that.
Could he maybe have been using the SL models to represent a different regiment? Still wouldn't explain the rules bending, I guess.
I do know you can't give sharpshooters to tanks as that doctrine is listed as being only applied to guard infantry units (with a BS of 3). Unless he was using some White Dwarf variant or something that let's you take tanks as infantry units.
I also don't know how he was running squads as you put it instead of platoons. Only way I can see that is if he took storm troopers and was just using what looked like normal infantry models as the storm troopers. Still wouldn't have been able to put lascannons in the squads though as stormies can't take them.
I dunno bud. I'm new to the guard myself, but it sounds like with what little knowledge I possess, you got hosed.
We all carry on,
When our brothers in arms are gone.
So raise your glass high
For tomorrow we die,
And return from the ashes you call.
You can use the steel legion models as non-steel legion troops. So that explains the lack of chimeras.
As for a legal army force chart thingy, its possible that he was using the steel legion models as storm troopers, but as DEADMARSH said they cant take lascannons if so.
I they weren't storm troopers, he would have had to have 2 HQ units if his list was to be legal, possibly 3, so if they were missing then thats another problem. (1 main HQ, and then 1 HQ for each troop choice on the organisation chart).
The 2 wound models may have been priests, by memory they have 2 wounds, but they cannot take power weapons. Unless the power weapons in question were eviscerators? They would look like large chainswords.
As for the sharpshooters doctrine, it cannot be given to the tanks. Period. He was definitely being dodgy there. If he says he was using an armoured company style list, he still can't, by memory. And more than that, all the non-tank units would have to have chimeras, which they dont.
Even if the list were legal, and it most definitely sounds like its not, the inclusion of 2 leman russ' and a basilisk in a 1000 point list seems a little cheesy, especially when fielded against someone who does not seem to be used to guard.
So yeah, they guy is a waste of time, dont bother playing him again. Or, learn the rules backwards, then challenge him to another game. When he tries anything, show him where he was wrong. Especially in the writing of his list. But honestly, I wouldn't waste my time, its better to avoid confrontation like this, the game is meant to be about fun. At least you know he obviously feels like he has to cheat in order to beat people. Either that, or he's no vet at all and has absolutely no idea what he's doing.
*Edit - just working with what you told me, his army list would have to come to at least 1300 points total, and would still be illegal if that were the point limit of the game.

"Pickles, the drummer, doodily doo. (Ding-dong, doodily, doodily, doo.)"
Also, you should google "garfield minus garfield". Awesome.
i would highly recommend that if you see this player again, make sure the whole world knows he is a cheater. as junkie pointed out, you played a 1000 point game, but he took easily 1300, maybe up to a good 1500 points.
or as junkie pointed out, make a fool of him. this one sounds most fun. if you play him again ask for a list, (he cannot refuse this, otherwiese he is cheating) and just make sure he gets what he diserves.
he seems like the player that dose not want to lose.
what army were you playing with btw?
My lord that fool just broke every rule in the IG codex. It is a sad state of affairs when people must cheat at game that has no bearing on the world to make themselves feel "better equipped"... please tell me he spoke with a lisp, laughed through his nose and wore a black t-shirt that had faded to grey with some long dead and forgetten metal band detailed on the back...
I must congratulate you on your own sportsmanship in dealing with this fool... and i have to ask, did you win???
Give me his email address. I'll tell him he cheated. You can only apply sharpshooters to BS 3 Guard infantry squads, not vehicles, nor BS 4 guard squads like Stormies or vets (or ratlings for that matter).
Powrrwpns can only be given to officers, rough rider sargeants, stormie sargeants, Vet squad sargeants and priests, so again, he lied - or else he can't read.
Sierra Company, 74th Noctan Strike Regiment - The Meatshields!
he cheated big time, but as others have asked, did you win?
Do storm troopers count as guard infantry? For the doctrine and transport use?
