No, I ain't going be putting up a thread using MY tactics with regards to the Rough Riders, I haven't been using them long enough to acutally decide for myself their best uses. However, it is precisely this reason. my inexperience with them, that I'm putting up this thread.
See, there is a 750pts tournament in my area, and the Rough Riders are a crucial part of my army. You can see my list in the Army Lists section, the one with the Vet. Sergeant getting an Honorifica. That's mine. So yeah, the Rough Riders are not only fluffy (with an Honorifica, whadya expect?) but the crucial units of the game. Their purpose is to take out any potential dangerous targets that threaten the rest of my army as they march up, e.g. Broadsides, tanks etc.
Many of my friends have admitted they'll have a hard time trying to counter the Rider assault. Howeve,r the problem is not with the opponent but with me. In several scenarios, I find that getting my Rough Riders to their target is pretty hard. I've tried running to cover, or covering the flanks with tanks (the Chimera and the Leman Russ) but they either lose a couple of men or take too long to reach their objective. So I was wondering, what IS the best way to send my Riders to the front in the best time possible?
Yes, I know that I'm a fool for using Rough Riders for such a crucial role in a tournament to boot, but not only will I benefit from the experience, we'll be looking at the Rough Riders in a new light.
I don't think you're a fool.
And actually at the 750 point level it might almost be a the best and most worthwhile choice.
I say tha because I have, despite my dismissing them in my post (which was geared primarily for the uber tournaments here in the US which are generally 1850), on more than one occasion seriously considered using them in a tournament or two.
Plus with the ability to move/charge for a total of 24" in one turn than means you can completely wipe out a heavy infantry unit in 1 turn.
True RRs suck against Zilla Nids or Tanks but they really rock against Termies and Tau Battle suits.
I treat RRs like true flanking forces, I place them on the edge of my DZ then run them up the board to suicide against said heavy infantry force.
Yeah.. since they're fast attack it's hard for the opponent to pre-empt their deployment. Hmm.
But the issue of getting there is still there. The table size is 4' by 4', which means that I'll prob. take about 2-3 turns just getting my Riders there. In such a case I'm most afraid they'll get shot down before they can reach their target.
How can I get them to the front without losing too much casualties?
About the counter-charge... It'll work against assault based armies, but not against shooty armies like Tau. I'll have to bring the fight to them.
i am not a IG player but i one thing works for my bt is give them something else to shoot at that looks scary. i use a LRC but i sure you could find some scary, possably a bombard??
Question all that you see
I have a Leman Russ. I'm resisting the temptation to turn it into a Demolisher...
that would work. if you play hard with it people will forget that you have over troops in your army
Question all that you see
Hmm. I guess using a Demolisher as a shield might work. In fact it WILL draw fire. Many of my past opponents make it a point to take out the big gun.
A friend of mine suggested cover... anyone has ideas for that?

In a small point game, Mech guard really shines because the amount of AT actually planned by your opponents is next to nil.
So bring a few chimeras; maybe a squad of sents or two. My personal opinion of small point games is to take things like Chimeras, Hellhounds or Sents and even RRs to help ensure that you can still inflict a large amount of wounds thanks to the large number of high strength weapons you have in your list.
MY current lists focuses on three aspects: Grenadiers, the tanks and of course the Rough Riders. The Rough Riders take a good part of it, the Grenadiers are maxed out to maximise their firepower and the tanks are there to provide cover and cover fire. It's going to be quite hard to squeeze in more armour...
Unless I drop my Grenadiers to their min. size...?
