i was just looking through the codex and i was looking at the Ultramarines honour guard. they are sweet. you effectively get a unit of power weapon armed tac marines. they would wipe a unir of termies or anything elite clean. anyway just on a side note, would anyone consider using this unit in your army? i play DA so i don't have the option, but at first glance they look pretty cool.
No, I wouldn't. They're just not worth it.
Honestly, they might be if they didn't come with the chapter champion and banner bearer. Both are reasonable models, but both are ludicrously expensive. The squad ends up being far more costly than is reasonable for the value you get out of them--and though they are pretty effective in close combat, they're still not going to beat a good portion of the made-for-cc units out there. Daemonettes still eat them, as do gene-stealers, furious-assaulting Khorne Berserkers, carnifexes, tyrants, daemon princes, etc.
In the end, I play Ultramarines and, though I do own a few, I wouldn't play them as a squad in anything other than a scenario specifically designed to include such a unit.
Although I agree that their points don't justify their value. I would have to say that justifying an argument with "They can be killed with Carnifi, tyrants, DPs, KBs, and gene stealers" is a cop out. Those units can all kill close combat units, and don't inherently make other close combat units worthless. I've seen honorgaurd as individual models work great in BA jump pack command squads.
My guess is bought as a model upgrade to a unit they are great. But a unit of pure honor guard are way too expensive to justify their points. Buy a 10 man assault marine squad instead, you get more, they move faster, and have melta bombs with 31 attacks on the charge.
Honour Guard are nothing special in combat, pretty lame at shooting, over priced and can't do anything Assault Marines can (get into Assault Range, take on hordes, provide value for money...etc).
They try to be a 'hard' combat unit but look like wimps compared to almost anything assaulty, Orks are just going to laugh at the power weapons, swamp you and win. Genestealers will strike fist and rend you appart, wounding big monsters on a 6+ is pretty poor and Khornate Beserkers move faster, can have furious charge and more attacks.
Plus they're Ultramarines.
hahaha awesome point: they're ultramarines. case closed. hehehe
oh by the way i think some of you are getting the honour guard and the tyrannic war veterans confused.
Model-wise; they are awesome. If you think away the Ultramarine symbols, one could make great mini's out of them. I really wouldn't mind converting a librarian of captain out of one.
Stat-wise; far too expensive. They are everything a normal marine is, but they have a power-weapon. That's just not worth the points. Not as a command squad, nor placed as additions to other squads.
"I have died a thousand deaths, and I will die a million more..."
Gotta ask, how many of you have actually tried using them? I see a lot of comments and from the sounds not a single person has tried them. Not saying that I've used them, as I prefer shooty lists (and play mostly nids these days besides) but listening to everyone cut them down without trying them is amusing. It's like the comments about shrikes wing. They try to be a 'hard' combat unit but look like wimps compared to almost anything assaulty, Orks are just going to laugh at the power weapons, swamp you and win. Yes, it's overpriced, but man is it effective.
16,000+ of Eldar (only need flyers)
7,000+ of Nids (want heirophant)
6,000+ of Space Marines (need rever titan)
4,400+ of Cygnar (all models for the faction)
1,500+ of Legion (just started)
As squad leaders, I'd say they're a good deal. IIRC, a veteran sergeant with a power weapon is something like 5-10pts more, and has 1pt lower ld than an honour guard.
So as a squad leader in a librarian- or chaplain-based list I think they'd have their place, if only for the ld!
Having an army and not owning a rulebook is like owning a car with no steering wheel.Originally Posted by amishcellphone

They are an expensive unit, but they mow down units that do not have a higher initiative. Now when you have unit with higher init PLUS power weapons it will kill anything! I love the flavor of using such a unit.
IMHO, the ultramarines HG is a very effective unit, but the cost is definitely high.
You know, you can also take a Deathwatch Kill team, make them veterans, then give them power weapons. Each one with a power weapon comes to a total cost of 45 points (ouch!) but man-oh-man! What a unit!! PLUS they come with melta bombs and special ammunition for thier bolters (kraken rounds ROCK!!)
Once a Marine, always a Marine.
