I was thinking of using storm troopers from 5 8 man squads instead of 4 10 man squads in order to pack in more plasma and melta guns.
Not sure if storm troopers have the resiliency to pull it off, anyone got any experience with using less then full storm trooper squads?
If it helps i would infiltrate 2 (would be 3 if i switch to 8 man squads) and put 2 of them in chimera's.
Yea I think it would last a fair amount of fire. Remember that these new squads count as individual units and are targeted as such so they should survive a while, yea.
It you want infiltration, you can only do 3 storm trooper squads. And thats with the fact that you will sacrific your entire army's elite choice for those 3 ST squads. Grenadier STs cant deep strike or infiltrate, if you want plasma guns why not just take veterans. If you want 4+ amor then carapace is an option.
I used small ST squads and I have to admit, I wasnt pleased too much. I use standard 10 man with sergeant and plasma guns, and I think its by far the best configuration. If you like plasma guns (LIKE I DO) you can consider veterans with carapace, 3 plasmas and a heavy weapon with sergeant, what else could you possible ask for.
Also, you loose 2 men in 8 man squad and you have to test morale. 3 men out of 10 man squad, and you have to test morale
Loranis, it depends what your army consists of. Could you give us a quick run-down of what else is in your army and an idea of how you intend to use your Grenadiers, that way we can put it in context and give you relevant advice.
I find that fielding more than about 2-3 squads as line infantry in a Grenadier army defeats the point, as they start to get in each others way and force each other out of cover. If you can't find an ideal spot for every squad then it begins to defeat the point of an adaptable special weapons based force.
Well its basicly a mechanised grenadier list, i have a limited number of models painted up with more on the way soon.
2 10 man Karskin squads /w 2 plasma guns, seargent /w plasma pistol and power weapon
2 10 man Karskin squads /w 2 plasma guns, seargent /w bolt pistol and power weapon
4 Karskin /w melta guns
2 chimeras /w twin linked heavy bolter (FW variant, use it as twin or normal bolter)
2 leman russ's /w heavy bolter sponsoons (magnetized so can remove)
2 special weapons squad 2 meltas, 1 demo charge and 3 normal troopers each
1 HQ /w officer(model is using the cadian FW torso so can basicly use any equipement expect power fist) and 4 models /w melta guns or plasma guns (have both)
5 Grey Knight terminators BC /w psycannon and 1 GKT /w psycannon
1 Grey Knight Grandmaster /w psycannon
1 leman russ with both executioner, leman russ and vanquisher turret painted up (this one is not started but should have it in a few months)
In theory i want to concentrate on taking and holding objectives with my storm troopers(especially the grenadiers), the grey knights (when i use them) DS with the HQ and the special weapon troopers, use the HQ and the special weapon squads as suicide squads/speed bumps.
This is a pretty cool list Loranis, my own list isn't a million miles away from this.
If you are going down the mechanized route then I would suggest fewer, larger squads, as the cost of the Chimera is extremley prohibitive, and although it is one of the better transports in the game in that it can lay down some good firepower - it still only has a side armour of 10, making it very soft for its points. What is this squad? I'm assuming this is a 4-man Storm Trooper squad with 2 Meltaguns + a Sergeant. In which case, would that squad be deepstriking? As regards squad size here, I would recomend taking them up to 6 man if I were you, it gives them an extra wound and helps keep them above 50%.4 Karskin /w melta guns
So in summary, squads with transports: the bigger the squad size and fewer the number of squads the better, and with deepstriking squads: 6 man squads are perfect.
Also, I notice you haven't capped out on elite choices. Personally I would never take an IG army without 2-3 elite choices. Some of the best choices in the codex are available here. Unless you are really set on having demo charges, I would consider taking more Storm Trooper squads - they have better BS, better armour and pay less for their guns.
Edit: Sorry you have 2 elite choices there. I'm not too used to allies! Still the point remains the same, although a demo charge is a cool weapon, the squad dosen't hold a candle to the equivilent Storm Trooper squad.
