oki know that most people are against this load out for devastators.. why put short ranged weapons in devastator squads many people ask.
i personally have found it to be a VERY good mix. costing the same as a misslie launcher it's not overly expensive. and if used properly it's very deadly ad effective
first off i personally use it with the infiltrate ability as given by a couple of the traits. this lets me get in range, even on the first turn of SOMETHING juicy and get back my points cost, even better it if's in cover and centrally located
in city fight where range is less important and cover is frequent making your anti-vechile shots count is a good idea. especally since most battle is done in t the 12-24 inch shooting range anyway
even without this against certian armys or style they can be very good. that land raider rushing up to disgorge it's terminator load out...not for long.. hey look a rhino army rushing at me, that 5 man termi-assualt squad...bye.. oh look a demon prince... or ah **** it's a carnifex charging my lines. MELTA!!!!!
with the infiltrate ability it becomes a much better unit than you'd imagine. either your enemy will over look the "short ranged melta weapons" or they'll spend stupid amount of firepower on it
and lets be honest even at it's max range it's still a high strengh low ap weapon...great for hitting tough armoured troops
anyway i was jsut wondering if anyone else had suggestions on how to use them or their opinions on them
and spelling fixed

I got lost on the road of life
I can see the usefulness of the Multi-Melta Devestator squad in a scenario such as Cities of Death, where, generally, the most distance you'll have between units is 24" to 36" due to buildings blocking LOS, etc.
Personally, I like the Multi-Melta to begin with, and would take it just because others don't.
I think it could work if you took mabye two units of them and then a predator destructor or a whirlwind to back them up. Mabye even taking Razorbacks to screen them might be a good idea, its up to you. Very viable option though.
“Krump first, assk qweztions neva'!"- 3000 Orks
Dark Eldar- 1500 1/0/0
"the very gods for vengeance cry”- 3000 Dwarves
Sounds like a good idea to me. I think I might pick up a squad of them like that if I decide to further my Space Marine army.
Really they are only acceptable if you are going to infilitrate them, and when the mission prevents it you are SOL. I hate to say it, but unless you want to give your devs tank hunting they arent really supposed to kill tanks (and still get a good rate of return on the points). ML let you put cheap marine killers well behind your army, and not expose them to enemy fire. Las/Plas Squads should do most of your tank killing and punching of 2+ saves. that is the correct choice for Dev squads.
Take life seriously, its lethal.
Actually, there is a correct choice for Dev squads. Multi-Meltas lose the ability to shoot Frag rounds, so are far worse against horde armies like nids or orks. Killing tanks isnt really the primary job of dev squads anyways. Las/Plas squads do it for far better points to effectivness. While i realize that 24'' is pretty reasonable range on most things, its just not very good for stuff that cant move. those extra 2 feet on ML really add up.

It doesn't have to be the primary job, but it can be. And, within 24", the Multi-Melta Devestators are every bit as effective vs. heavy infantry as a Missile Launcher, and more-so against Terminators and the likes.Originally Posted by DominionWeaponsGroup
You can't assume that your Las/Plas squads can hunt all the tanks and hunt all the heavy infantry, unless you have a lot of those min/maxed squads, which I'm sure few people really use that often (for tourneys, anyways - bad composition and all that). I'm pretty sure that many, many people who take Missile Launcher Devestators use them at some point or another to hunt tanks, and, especially in a heavy-terrain table, such as a Cities of Death board (the starting topic), the added range isn't that much of a benefit, where the Multi-Melta's lower AP and Melta rule can be.
Ah, I love mature debates.
