I had an epiphany last night, and I started to see Attack Bikes for all the glorious and undervalued unit they are.
Lets look at them in depth.
A squad of 3 Attack Bikes is 150 points. Now...at first glance you are thinking this is a lot, but it's not, not by a long shot. A 6 man squad of Dev's with 3 Heavy Bolters is only 15 points less.
So what do I get for my extra 15 points you ask? well....
3 TL bolters instead of regular bolters
+1 Toughness (except for instant death)
Can move and shoot the Heavy Bolters
Can move 12" and still fire
Can move 24" and gain an Invulnerable save (but can't fire)
Can move, fire, and still assult (you don't want to assult with this unit, but if you really needed to for some strange reason, the ability exists)
How is that NOT worth 15 points? The ONLY advantage the Dev's have over the Bikes is the dev's can take 4 wounds before losing a Heavy Bolter, and Bikes lose one every other wound, but the bikes also get to effectively ignore the first wound, and they are much more difficult TO wound because of thier toughness. And one more very small advantage (and this is really reaching...) is the dev squad can have a vet sarge.
I know they are overshadowed by the awsomeness of the speeder, but speeders go down so quickly, and being skimmers they can be difficult to keep in cover. The bikes get the same move, are a little less expensive then 2 speeders, have almost as much firepower, and are way more survivable.
So my question is...Why don't more people use this unit?
Who has 3 attack bikes?
Also, fast attack slots.
As far as my army goes, fast attack slots are far more valuable than heavy support.
But I agree on principle, they are pretty good. Very cool models, very nice sprues. You get a lot of nice extras on them.Mind you, who had 3+ LSTs before the new codex came out?Originally Posted by Adrian MalSeraph

Victory points, I would rather have 2 models so it's a small all or nothing unit. Aside from that, 150 pts isn't the end of the world victory point wise and they WILL be targeted. I like it, good replacement for HB devs.
...and you will know my name is the lord, when I strike down my vengence upon thee...
I use two Attack Bikes with Multi-meltas for tank hunting, when I don't want to bring devastators. Nothing mobile hunts tanks quite as well--except other tanks, and space marine tanks just aren't that good. I'd rather spend 130 points on attack bikes than a predator any day.
When your opponent has Krak ML, having 3 bullet shields in cover is better than no bullet shields who don't really like cover at all.
Plus don't you have to remove whole models when you take wounds if possible?
I do have 2 with Multi-melta's, but they're a good throwaway tank hunter (or not throwaway and go on to kill another Predator and Vindicator!).
Yes, you have to remove whole models when possable, that is why I said the Attack bike squad loses a Heavy Bolter every other wound it takes, but gets to effectively ignore the first one.
I use them often, i have 3, and all of them have interchangable weapons. i like them, as i often have a fast attack slot to spare.
One is mostly if not everytime taken by the assault marines. ( we play mostly 1500-2000).
I know landspeeders are very valuable also, but i like variation, so the bikes get their share of the use too. I now see that regular bikes do not come into play often with me anymore it seems. Must make a mental note to add them once in a while.
With me, it's rare to meet the same force twice in a row.
LOL...I'm the same way. I have probably made twice as many lists as actual games I have played. The current list I'm playing is the only one I have played more then 1 day, cause I really like it... and it has a big bike squad in it.
The drop pod is the single most under rated unit in the codex. I am the only space marine player i can find you actually fields them - maybe this is because they dont have a normal model, for reasonable money - Im sure thats part of it.
But a lot of players i play seem to get pretty excited about me playing drop pods - then its second turn, and there force is broken, with 30 or so marines lookin mean. To me, drop pods are vastly under used, and under exploited.
