OK, heres the situation: I have a drop pod space marine army pretty much tailored to kill Eldar (Dark, Light or in any other color they come) I came up with 291 points left to spare. Well its a drop pod-ing army so i just took off 30 pts for a drop pod. What i need to know is, which is more effective at killing some Prancy Eldar?
1. Terminator squad (five man) with Preferred Enemy: Eldar, two (2) Assault Cannons, and Furious Charge for the whole group.
2. Two Combat Squads (five man each) both with a Heavy Bolter, a Plasma Gun, Preferred Enemy: Eldar, and Veteran Sergeants (one with a Combat Shield, one with Purity Seals). And one extra Drop Pod.
3. A Devastator Squad (ten man) with Preferred Enemy: (you guessed it) Eldar, a Veteran Sergeant, two (2) Heavy Bolters, one (1) Missle Launcher, and one (1) Plasma Cannon.
From all your game experience, which do you think will kill the most heathens?
Hey, the termies might wanna leave them in the box or any tanks you have, bright lances=dead termies =P. If you have anything with assault cannons that would be great eg (drednaughts and landspeeders). Sorta off topic there but i would say either 2 or 3, but truely for me i would pick 3 remember to take out those reapers and rangers before they get your dev squad. I would only pick 2 depending on what your againsts like lots of infintry like a mass guardian player. So number 3 would be my answer.
Hope i sort of helped Tim
Since 5 or 6 man tactical squads with a heavy and special weapon are so cheap, I think I like them best. They can land and let the enemy have it with their melta or plasma guns, maybe even shooting down some transports, or taking out some Aspect Warriors.
Sorry didnt read it properly =P, i forget the eldar guns names. i dont play them.
Hm. I had a feeling the Terminators were gonna get junked, I never liked small squads anyway. Now it comes to this, what should I arm my Combat squads with? Im not too into the landspeedr idea, deep strike and drop pod assault are a little different as to when you can or cant do one or another. ill give it some thought though. Thanks! :ninja:
the drop pods themselves are usefull with that storm bolter, however i like the pie plate deathwind launcher. makes them think a little longer and helps a bit with crowd control. hell you might even get lucky with the rolls and cause a fallback every now and then.
Ok fellows we have a difficult task, so we have to be more deadly than everyday.
Make mistakes and confuse the enemy - The Doctor
Tactics are nice but it is violence that wins the day.
Yeah my whole army is drop podding into battle, I got that idea from Dawn Of War, but i didnt leave that much room for the extra add-ons. I just got a revalation. Im thinking of two Dreadnoughts, each with an assault cannon. Oh btw, Vulcan, its nice to see another MGS fan out there lol. Thanks!
Go for Assault Terminators. Especially when you want to furious charge people. But then again, I prefer Assault Termies.Originally Posted by IroncladmonkeyHeavy Bolters are for troop killing, Plasma Guns are for killing light vehicles and heavyly armored troops (i.e. not Eldar). Try not to mix roles with your troops. Especially when you drop pod your troups, you might want to think about flamers. You should be close enough to cause some damage with those.Originally Posted by IroncladmonkeyI would advise against mixing heavy weapons in a dev squad. try to go for 4 hvy bolters or 4 missile launchers or 4 plasma cannons. But don;t mix, it makes your squads less effective. SInce I donlt know the rest of your army I have a hard time telling you which one to go for. Heavy Bolters are really good to kill many eldar troops and can take on Vipers also because of the sheer amouont of lead they put into the air. But If you need something that can take on the Falcons and Wave serpents you might want to go for Missile Launchers. I would advise against Plasma Cannons against Eldar. I am also not sure why you want to invest the points for the Vet Sarge.Originally Posted by Ironcladmonkey

That is just one of my things, I ALWAYS use Veteran Sergeants, no matter what. Its just a quirk that I have, like the same reason i dont like having small squads (less than ten is usually out). Why exactly shouldnt I use a plasma cannon? is there any specific reason or just because? And on any case im pretty sure that im gonna use the dreads with heavy flamers and assault cannons unless that would be unwise. I'm right now open to suggestions on anything under 260 pts that can be fit into a drop pod =)
Fair enough. it just does't make sense to me spend the points for a vet sarge.Originally Posted by Ironcladmonkey
Small units usually don't work well for marines, so that one makes senseOther than mixing heavy wepons (which is never a good idea) the reason not to use a Plasma Cannon is that its disadvantages outweigh the advantages against Eldar, in my humble opinion.Originally Posted by Ironcladmonkey
It is AP2 and gets hot. AP2 is good against marine equivalent armor (SM, CSM, Necrons) and unless your opponent fields lots of scorpions and reapers you don't need it. anything that is AP4 will do nicely against most Eldar troops.
Does that make sense to you? Or do I need to elaborat further?Dread sounds good. I would not use it against Eldar, because there are usually too many Fire Dragons and/or Bright Lances around.Originally Posted by Ironcladmonkey
