Welcome to Librarium Online!
What, pray tell, is the best use of a Librarian? GW has an article about these might psykers, but is LO's opinion? My thoughts are to use them as a melee unit. A force weapon is good only in hand-to-hand combat. Plus, if you give him Might of Heroes, that could be another 3 attacks with that force weapon, and maybe add the Veil of Time, allowing you to re-roll your attacks. While costly, the Librarian could be made into a melee-god, Emporer notwithstanding.
Therefore you could only have MoH and VoT on a Librarian by having another cast MoH onto him.
Simple VoT is brilliant for slicing up oponents, MoH is useful when bunged onto another charecter.
VoD is limited in application, low In compact models are hard to come by.
FotA has its uses.
FotD is the bane of IG/any army non-fearless on foot.
Casting FotD is best done via Deep Strike, Drop Pods or a Bike to get into the heart of an enemy formation.
Different people use them for different things, mine gets Furious Charge, VoTime and FotD.
6 S5 re-rolling attacks are nasty and when instant deathing S5 helps alot with the T6 targets you want to go for.
FotD is killer against some opponents but a waste of points against fearless armies like Khorne/Tyranids etc.
No problem. It came as a bit of a surprise to me too. GW must have thought a 9 Attack, all re-rolling Librarian using a Force Weapon was a bit much.
For the reason above, librarains make the best shooty HQs.
Chaplains are the best assault HQs.
It is true that Chaplains are very good in HTH (especially when they are leading a close combat squad like assault marines or assault terminators). Librarians are very good in HTH also. However and usually they don't have a choice of good ranged weapons, so making them a good shooty option can be tricky.Originally Posted by ForgedInTheFurnaceOfWarIt is actually a standar rule - only one Psychic power per turn, unless a special rules lets you do more (as is possible for some chaos and Eldar models, for example).Originally Posted by Silver WingsThat of course is ultimately up to the personal taste and preference of each player.Originally Posted by Shadow701
I can maybe give you some ideas, though.
Many people try to use him as the opponent's HQ killer, using the Force Weapon's special power. Especially when combined with a Iron Halo, Familiar and a Bike (to increase your own chances of survival).
Some people go for the opponents rank-and-file troops, using the Veil of time and/or Hammerhand.
Another possibility is trying to make the most out of the "Fury of the Ancients" and "Fear of the Darkness" powers. Pinning their opponents or making them run away. Both powers can be incredibly effective against the likes of IG, Eldar or Tau. Especially when combining "Fear of the darkness" with a drop pod assault
Or you can use your Librarian "just" as a psychic defense using the Hood. Which can be good against some Chaos and Eldar armies.
There are many ways to use them and they can be very versatile and ultimately it comes down to your own taste, but don't limit yourself to just using him in one role, there are many other things a Librarian can do. Give them a try and see what you like the best.
Does that answer your questions or do you need me to elaborate further?
Shut up and play.
After some thought, I came up with this. Equip him with a jump pack and Might of Heroes. Lead an Assault squad. Charge (naturally) and use MoH on the "hidden" power fist sergeant.
A Chaplain gives the entire squad including himself a re-roll. 6 P.Fist Attacks from MoH are roughly equivalent to 4 with re-rolls to hit (both average 3 hit) while the Chaplain gives a bonus to the rest of the squad and the Librarian does not at a higher point cost without an invulnerable save.
The best thing about the librarian is that they are very versitile. They work well in assault armies and/or shooty armies. I always equip my librarian with one assault skill (MOH) and one shooty skill. That way you are ready for both.
A chaplain would be far better. After some thought, I came up with this. Equip him with a jump pack and Might of Heroes. Lead an Assault squad. Charge (naturally) and use MoH on the "hidden" power fist sergeant.
Librarian, 6 attacks on the charge, 4 hits, 2 dead (against meqs)
Chaplain, 6 attacks on the charge, 5.34 hits, 2.67 dead (against meqs)
LIB powerfist, average of +2 attacks, 6 attacks on the charge: 3 hits, 2.52 dead.
Chap powerfist, 4 attacks, 2.66 hits, 2.24 dead.
Lib + fist total: 4.42 dead MEQs
Chap + fist total: 4.91 MEQs
Thus the chaplain is better.
Now which costs more?
Chaplain with jump pack + terminator honours + bolt pistol + frags = 122
Librarian with jump pack + terminator honours + bolt pistol + frags + MOH = 142
Thus the chaplain costs 20 points less, and is better, also note the chaplain has a 4+ invunerable, and will kill more units at higher initative.
Now about the rest of the squad, with lib they get no rerolls: 27 attacks on the charge, 13.5 hits, 6.75 wounds, 2.24 dead. (against MEQs)
Now the chaplains squad would get rerolls: 27 attacks, 24 hits, 12 wounds, 4 dead. (against MEQs)
Thus the chaplain + squad in total would kill 8.91 MEQs
Librarian gets only 6.67 kills Against MEQs.
Thus i strongly erge you to field a chaplain over librarain if you want to assault.
