Welcome to Librarium Online!
I've been thinking about making a list around 3 LR w/ all drop troops.
That got me thinking, in general, are 3 LR overkill or are they just bad-@@@? Can they hold their own or do they need the help of a bassie and/or sentinels/hellhounds?

Although I love the 'Russ you can rarely expect them to do fantasticaly by thier lonesomes for very long.
They don't have brilliantly reliable anti-tank. People seeing 3 will spread out too much and use cover.
I prefer an all or nothing aproach to Drop Troops, maybe a couple of hidden Sentinals for Improved Comms but mixing has never worked as well for me. It allows your enemy to engage your army in an even more peicemeal fashion.
In a way I guess I can see it as over kill but not really.
Russes uses in an army are to destroy ifantry squads or hordes and if a few vehicles. But basilisks have inderect fire which will be very effective also so other units can't shoot at it if it is behind cover, only if you take inderect fire.
One of the ways that I have seen it effective is one basilisk and two russes or three russes.
I was playing in a battle last weekend versing my cousin he had 3000 points of guard and witch hunter and three russes. Which I found really deadly.:w00t: I went first and I had a squad of sm infiltrating with a lascannon and boom goes down russ. But after that my guys were gone.
So yes three ruses really isn't over kill. It will all just depend on what army you verse.
Three Russes isn't overkill, just good IG playing. Ordnance is one of our advantages and we need to use it IMO (along with Heavy and Special Weapons).
I would recommend one or two Basilisks with a Russ though in a Drop trooping list. One with Improved Comms would be nice too.
