I was curious on everyone's thought about which tank made the better all around fire support, The vindicator or the whirlwind??
Yep, Whirlwind for me. You have to get too close with a Vindicator for my liking...
But I call to God, and the LORD saves me.
i hate that argument against vindicators that you have to get too close. in most games you are about 24 inches give or take from each other, and the objective involves the enemytaking the centre or generally moving around the centre. all you have to do is put your vindicator in the middle of your deployment zone. trust its more than close enough. they come to you.
now that we have debunked that argument, lets compare them;
vindicators are just scary, strength 10 and ap 2, it can touch anything. often the tough units that it can touch, and wipe, are expensive. one direct hit and they're toast, and the vindicator has made its points back. vindicators also have a real fear factor, who wants a high strength and ap pie plate on top of their unit. their armour is respectable, and they fire ordinance, pinning anyone? some extra penertration anyone?
now the whirlwind, i don't see all the hype, its not that scary, its just an annoyance. anything it can do the vindecator can do better, except perhaps fire indirectly, but thats all i can see for it.
And that is exactly why is good.now the whirlwind, i don't see all the hype, its not that scary, its just an annoyance. anything it can do the vindecator can do better, except perhaps fire indirectly, but thats all i can see for it.
Vindicators dispite there range, will likely get one shot off, there after, any opponent who cares will kill the tank, other who does, such as orcs will ignore it.
At the end of the day, the two tanks have very different uses, IMO.
The whirlwind is a solid, cheap anti-infantry choice, good at causing disruption, can fire mines if you want. It is irritating, but generally not game-winning. You can stick it behind some trees in the middle of your deployment zone, and almost forget about it, leaving it in peace to rain death.
The vindicator is much more intimidating, and will give many people pause for thought when they see it go down on the table. No doubt about it, it is scary. However, because it is so scary, it will be lucky to get one shot off, because people will generally make it a priority target. If it survives for a long time then it will probably become the focal point of the game, both culling lots of enemy, and soaking up plenty of fire. However, chances are pretty great that it will simply die in turn one or two, maybe taking the pressure off the rest of your army for that time.
Thus, I abstain. Neither is 'better' than the other, both are very different. Generally, however, you will see more whirlwinds than vindicators.

I agree that the vindicator is scary.
I agree that the vindicator has the power to back it's threat.
But I still say whirl wind, simply because it does the job, and what it doesn't do other tanks are already on the feild doing. With the armies I have put it in the infantry crushing power of the whirl wind is what is needed. The vindicator is just too expensive.
I make a point of never laughing at stupid people. They can't help that they're stupid, just as I can't help hitting them.- Aun'Vre
Yes, I agree with minus_t, they are very different, you can't directly compare them.
But if I had to pick one, it'd have to be the vindicator. It scares alot of people, and draws fire from the rest of my list. I take one in every force I pick.
I'd have to say that I prefer the Whirlwind, since it can fire indirectly and doesn't cost nearly as much as the Vindicator.
And that's the clincher.
For 10pts over the price of the popular Vindicator config, you can get 2 Whirlwinds.
It's a cheap way to put some heavy-duty ordnance on the table (pinning pie plate goodness, mmm).
Post your army lists in the ARMY LIST section! Not that hard!
Whirlwinds need hills, they hide behind them.
Vindicators kind of sneak around in the valley shooting things.
A Whirlwind is much easier to use, and although it cant kill a Land Raider and 5 CSM Chosen Terminators in 1 shot it can kill a Raider with Archon and 10 Incubi.
I've done both, the DE one was the more priceless.
