Is there another use for a Land Raider?? I bought a LR about one year ago. I just used it for the first time in a take and hold mission to rush my termies to the front. This got me thinking, because when they got out the tank was only mildly helpful. Is there another use for the LR or are they destine to only slingshot termies to the front???
Well, typically landraiders arent useful, in under 3000 points.
Normal termintors dont need a transport, (other then the drop pod once in awhile.)
Assault terminators arent really useful either, untill about 3000 points.
Peace, i would avoid using them.
i think that is a bit harsh to limit the land raider and assault termies to 3000 pts. i often play 1500 pts and assault termies are a regular feature, sometimes with a land raider. and i play dark angels. Back to the topic, if you take away the land raiders transport, capacity, it is almost equal to a pred annihilator with sponsons. so unless, it is transporting something, i think you are losing some of its effective ness.
So you will play basically 1/3 of you points on a single unit?i often play 1500 pts and assault termies are a regular feature, sometimes with a land raider.
If that unit dies, your lose, why would your opponent do anything else besides kill your landraider and pin your assault termintors - or worse put units infront of the assault catch, and two side haches, and then easily pop it with a melta, say form a bike squad - why i did that just a few games ago - poped the landraider and killed all the expensive assault units in a single swoop.
All of your eggs in one basket is never a good idea.
I find the trick with the LR/LRC is to know when to disembark the contents. For every turn that unit is in the LR/LRC it's not killing or holding objectives and runs a greater risk of being pinned. I've had my fair shares of times when my techmarine became the only thing left alive when the LRC was destroyed. But I still enjoy fielding the model.

To me, the Land Raider plays a lot like terminators do when it comes to points.
I have a buddy with a Khorne list and at 1500 he fields a LR. At 1850 he leaves it out.
The reasoning is this- in a 1500 (all-comers lists is all we play), you're fairly restricted on what you can bring, so a lot of tac squads, devs, etc. are still rolling MLs instead of LCs. There isn't a lot of dedicated anti-tank on the table (or AP 2 for that matter) so when he rolls his LR and termies, a lot of times the list does very well.
Now, yes, against Necrons or Tau, it probably wouldn't work as well, but I had a very nicely balanced 1,500 SM list that was just utterly smoked by his 1,500 Khorne list.
1,500 is an interesting point level because you don't really get to play the army you want to most of the time. Upgrades like sgt.s with PFs and whatnot are still a little pricey at this level. Or maybe you can't afford a second group of ML devs, or the drop pod for that dreadnaught.
Because of that, it's probably my favorite level to play- big enough you can pull out some fun stuff, and some units (like the LR and termies especially) really come into their own.
We all carry on,
When our brothers in arms are gone.
So raise your glass high
For tomorrow we die,
And return from the ashes you call.
Paying 1/3 of our army list price on one unit? HELL YEAH!
I actually thought of an army with 2 LRCs in a 1,000pts army... It was t3h ev1l!
We are the army of HQ choices that easily cost over 300pts, paying 250pts for a tank isn't unheard of.
Post your army lists in the ARMY LIST section! Not that hard!
(My landspeeder with the A/C, HB combo, however only had one good shot all game and that was in the hammerhead. It spent 2 turns shooting at a squad of Kroot from about 18 inches. In 2 turns I only killed ONE!!! AAGHGHG!! They were in cover and that made all the difference.)
I have only used my LRC twice in about 6 months due to the points. The first time it got busted before it could move (I had no cover to hide in). The second time it ruled the table top!
Once a Marine, always a Marine.
I guess im not like everyone else... i like normal land raiders but dislike crusaders (i know, unheard of, but then again i dont like assault squads or chaplains either)
I'll field a land raider prometheus anyday before a crusader
Land raiders were made better in 4th edition since now you can move 6" and shoot all your guns (albeit one lascannon is shooting with BS2)
to me its a bunker moving 6" a turn blazing away with all the guns, toting a 10 man tac squad with 2 meltas and a powerfist that can be rushed up quickly and dump them in cc if the oppurtunity presents itself. for this reason i always equip land raiders with smoke launchers so if you need to make 'the rush' you can at least pop smoke and have more security.
But as Firedrake said, their just 'cool' and really fun to use, and its fluffy to use them as chapters use lots of land raiders but you rarely see them on a tabletop.
