I've been reading all the army lists, and all the posts on inquisitors as part of your WH armies. And have been wondering something. Please forgive me if this isn't in the right place! I haven't posted much, and have noticed that some of the other topics are too old to reply to.
A lot of the posts, always have an Inquisitor as an elites choice. Was wondering why that is? Do WH/SOB players prefer Canoness over Inq Lrd as an HQ choice?
Main reason I'm asking is, I'm in the process of creating my army. I have an Inq w/ retinue, that I plan on using for my HQ. (I'm also taking a Canoness) Was wondering if people think they'd be better off spending points elsewhere?
Also, how small of a retinue do you (all WH players) use? How large?
What mine is looking at right now is.
Acolytes (usually 2, or 3)
Warrior x3 (depending on game will use either vet gaurd, or gun serv)
All mounted in a chimera
So I'm looking at a unit costing upwards of 200pts

I prefer the Canoness over an Inq Lord because I love Faith points. I no longer mix Inquisitors with my Sisters unless they are the Elite Choice Inquisitor.
Now I have used Inquisitor Lords but I am more successful with them when I induct Space Marines. The Inq Lord provides me with the accessability to nifty WH units and Space Marines give me a tough army.

=][= is not really a "warrior" unit to be honest. He gives you access to other fine units or powers. If you take him to gain access to assassins for example, a logical choice is to make him as cheap as possible. Also, if you go for a shooty retinue the cheaper version is good enough. The only real reason to take the =][= Lord I think is to get the higher LD value when you want to use some psychic powers... Canoness is much better figure that can put any enemy figure in deep troubles...
Yeah, I've come to the realization that the Canoness is awesome! In my last game, she charged into a 10 man squad of Necrons by herself and whittled them down.
As for the Inq Lrd, well thats a tough one. I've been toying with the idea of playing a puritan. No pyshic powers. Most of the time, I only take 1 power at most anyways.
As for retinue, I've been thinking of sticking with a shooty type. Though it seems like an easy enough point switch to go with combat servitors and make them a little more cc efficient.
Hard to fill that 2nd HQ choice, as I don't like the idea of 2 Canonesses fighting together. Only 1 should lead.
For shooty =][= you probably will go with 3 HB - Plasma Cannon is nice, but expensive for my taste. With 3 heavy weapons you will want to stand still and keep shooting, and I do not know what psychic power would work with such a setup. Of course, you could use some middle-ranged assault weapon, get close and use some devastating psychic power...
I have gone "Cheap" with an Inquisitor as an Elite choice.
I buy the =][= and then get two 5 man IST units w/ plasma or GL's and I get a Chimera. Total is less than 300.

A lesser Inquisitor blends nicely with ISTs, often lending just enough boost in CC that they survive the first round. BUt a 20 point model should really be Ld9.
Sisters Repentia: Wow what beautiful models! Wow what terrible rules! -stjohn70
Wow, a lot of sister fanatics, not that thats bad!
Anywho, I actually perfer the =I= Lord over cannoness due to the fact that he is an Inquisitor! (perish the thought!), and because of his weapon options. I mean, my standard IL runs with just a force weapon and Inferno pistol (ok, maybe "JUST" isn't that great of a word to use), and has killed everything set before him, including the nightbringer! w00t!
Not to mention you can get assassins!
And a landraider transport!?!? sign me up!
So, yes, thats my view,
cheers all ye sisters!

Yeah, Inq Lrds seem like a good choice for me. Problem is, as people have said, to get him to do well in a certain aspect, you have to buy the right gear. I haven't been able to find a balanced IL as of yet. I can either go all shooty and hope noone gets within assault range, or go with CC and hope I don't get shot up getting close.
I just don't like the idea of 2 Canoness' fighting together in the same force. But I have been thinking of a Palatine as a sub-commander. I could attach her to a celestian retinue and still have my actual Canoness still be independant.
My other concern with my IL is # of retinue. I feel that to really survive I have to take a retinue with high numbers. Unless I go shooty, then I could probably get away with just 6 or so.
