This is my first Warhammer army, (IG) and I was just wondering what peoples opinions are on Armored Fist squads. Are they worth it? If I did choose to use them, would having only one be useless?
Depends on what army your planning on usisng, If you plan to be mobile then yes use them if not then no, Because thye are a waste of points, I think that they are a waste of points becasue they cost a moderate amount of points and Alot of the time there a box fulla kills for races like tau.But on the other hand there moderatly good at Takeing objectives biultding before the enemy can.
I love me some Armored Fist squads. htey let you place Heavy Weapons in good positions faster than walking them and the Chimeras themselves can pack alot of fire power and with a good front AV they survive better than most transports from the front.
Armoured fist squads are VERY worth it. They provide a reasonably cheap troop choice (face it, the cheapest infantry platoon will set you back about 180 points with only lasguns, whereas you can have a tooled up chimera and a squad with a flamer for about 150, maybe less).
My main reason is this: Mobility. All armies should have at least a small amount of mobility available to them. If you dont, then all you can do is merely respond to your opponent, rather than dictate terms yourself. And a chimera with 2 heavy flamers is never anything to sneeze at.
I typically run a large infantry platoon and a grenadiers squad in a chimera, however in my last battle I ran an armoured fist instead, and infiltrated the grenadiers as storm troopers. It worked pretty well (against nids). Admittedly, the armoured fist were wiped out fairly rapidly, however they still performed their task:hold the bugs up for a turn, presenting more useful targets for the rest of my army. And the chimera just went to town on his genestealers.
So I say: very worth it. If you dont want to though, then I suggest you set about looking for other means of providing mobility of some kind, what with deep strike, scout moving sentinels, rough riders, something!
For the people who say guard should just sit and shoot, I wonder how you manage to beat any reasonable tau list, who will be simply jumping out shooting and jumping back so you cannot return fire.
As for only having one armoured fist squad, you can only have 1 per infantry platoon, so to have more you would also need more infantry platoons. Thats a fairly large initial outlay for a new army, so I would advise against it for now.
So in summary, I believe they are very worth it. You need SOME mobility at least. And if not an armoured fist, then maybe you could run some grenadiers in the chimera instead, they will probably do the job a little better for you, although they are a little more expensive.

Also, you should google "garfield minus garfield". Awesome.
The question shouldn't be is armored fist squads worth it, the question should be do you really want to dump the points in another infantry platoon. This is the main reason ppl field armored fist squads and buy-in-large they are usually just regular infantry squads and use chimeras as fire support.

I think they are worth it, my first game against Tau, rushed them strait up the middle. Chimera killed the enemy commander with combi of pintle stubber and multi laser. The squad knocked his devilfish out with a missile launcher. Plus, the commander shot like 4 seeker missiles and they didnt do anything. Infact, infantry killed it. Try and keep enemy infantry away from it because they can be deadly.
If you want to get Chimeras, Armoured Fist squads are worth it, but if you want a Mobile objective taker, Jack of all trades squad, then I would much rather have a squad of Grenadiers.
Don't get me wrong, just taking Chimeras is good enough. When you have other higher AV tanks on the board, Chimeras can last a long time, are mobile and provide a decent amount of firepower.
This is how I would field an AF squad: Vet Sgt, Lascannon, Plasma Gun, Close Order drill. This squad would stard in cover and I would just use the Chimera for a Gun Platform.
My Chimera would be Equipped with Turret Multilaser, Hull Heavy Bolter, Smoke or Extra Armor, and if I had an extra 12 points a Pintle Stubber.

Are armoured fist squads good? Yes.
Why do I take an armoured fist squad? Mainly to fill up another troops slot allowing me to slow my deployment down a litte. I also like to have a Chimera in case the board I get stuck with has little terrain, the Chimera is far more expendable than my command squads and Basilisk and thus can provide some solid cover if it is really necessary. That and the chimera can provide mobility if I really do need it badly.

Ah yes, Chimeras. I miss my old chimeras. When i was new to 40K i fielded 1 for every game i played. That chimera was the first IG model i ever bought. i had bought some 40K models with no intention of playing tabletop. as my ig increased i still used that chimera. when i was getting beat time after time the chimera was still my favourite vehicle over my first leman russ and my first bassie. even though i was losing i often found the chimera to be the most cost effective unit. since people were laying fire and assault into my big guns while the chimera tok it's shots when it could and delivered my standard out of the box 10 man squad of kasrkin grenadiers with flamer and grenade launcher
alas, i've fallen into going for the max firepower static guard type approach more and more.
i use hellhounds more than chimeras these days. this is because i can hide the hellhound and use it as an insurance policy against assaults by hiding just out of line of sight while being able to move up to 6" and toss that glorious inferno cannon template at the enemy who is try to advance into my support weapons. since i'm not moving my army chimeras aren't fielded. but taking grenadiers as your troops in chimeras is really cool! especially since you can use the chimera to block LOS onto your storm troopers helping to keep thier special weapons alive. or zip twice the regular movement while trying to keep outof enemy LOS that can hurt your decent front armour. butthat side armour.... eep..
my ideal chimera:
-Hull Heavy Bolter
-Turret Multilaser (for the extra strength, not AP) and that turret should be a predator turret conversion like my 3rd chimera was
-Pintle Heavy Stubber
** lose the heavy stubber for Track Guards and Smoke if it's got meltagun troop inside it.
