So since I first started with my pure DH army, i have slowly gone and played with both IG and WH allies and keep getting lured back and forth between the two when I read bits and pieces about the different armies.
I love both for so many reasons, I'm still yet to try SM.
SO I thought I would ask you all for your opinions...
Who is the best ally for the DH?
Forget the fluff, lets talk which armies work together better?
SM and WH have power armour and can walk the line matching the save of the GK, where as the IG have the high powered guns that the DH lack in...
Also if SM, then is there a certain chapter?
Maybe the only way is pure....

Imperial Guard, not only do they have the loads of heavy weapons and anti tank that the daemonhunters lack, but it also makes up for their lack of numbers. Very cool. Witchhunters aren't a half bad idea either, event they add some numbers.

You can do both IG and WH at once, actually. Induct the IG and Ally the WH. This also brings out the IG option for multiple Sentinel squadrons if you want, or even 1 Lemun Russ for some heavy armor. Or more then just 2 troop choices for numbers. And you can still get you WH goodies like a Dominion squad, a Cannoness, or the every-lovely Seraphim option.
Overall, I would say that IG offer a little bit more in the heavy weapons and vehicle count departments. But WH have the tricksy faith points, power armor, better shooting and Ld and with the Seraphim they get better mobility, too. So I'd say a little of both could be in order.
One trick I like is to get a cheap Cannoness with virtually no upgrades (Bolt pistol and close combat weapon!) and give her a Book of St. Lucius. Park her near the IG squads and they test morale on an unmodifiable 10 Ld, plus the squad of Seraphim I'd ally now have 3 faith points to play with rather then just 1.

Well, you can only really ally WH into a DH army. Guard and Marines are inducted
I think Guard is the best choice. Cheap bodies, and plenty of firepower - the two things that a pure DH force lacks.
Marines are ALLIES, it says so in the codex of daemonhunting goodness. However since you can't take them with an army with any GK's in it marines are a waste. Me, I vote on PURE, since I take only GK's and other stuff isn't needed. Masses of basic GKs are much better than anything else you can get.

As to the poll, nuns with guns are cool and flying nuns with flaming guns are cooler, but nothing is better than grunts with big guns and tanks - IG + WH all the way.
