Heres a question. what is an appropriate amount of bodies in an army at 1500 and 2k? My current 1500 list has about 42 or so models in the army, only 38 of which are marines, rest are 2 dreads and 2 HQ's.
So theres my question, how many marines and non marine units hsould i have in games of the above points.
It varies from person to person and chapter to chapter; I think the current standard most marine players around here hold is ten to fifteen at about 750-1000 and about 5-15 more per 500pts depending on your preferences. (I know I field fifty marines in an 1850pt list; 13 in a 500pt list, both being mechanised; and if I'm lucky 15-25 models ina biker list at 1500.)

hrm, ok im also counting my assault marines as "just" marines, basically anything that has 2 legs, that isnt on wheels or a tank or ewahtever
I would say definitely 40+ at 1500 pts or more. From that you can build a tactical force. But without a strong base of troops, esp with Space Marines. We have few models enough in our armies, as is. After 1850, I'd definitely start increasing that base of marines.

I've got sixty-one in my favourite 1500 point marine list. That is a little more body-intensive, though, than I think is common.
If I were to make a Blood Angels force right now it would have about 47 models, including one HQ and 3 tanks.
Baal Predators baby, can hardly beat 12 shots from one model.
Yeah, these guys have it on the button.
You want around 40 Marines in a 1500 list, and 50 marines in an 1850 list.
For 2000pts, 50 would be good enough, use some of the extra points for tanks and vehicle stuff.
Well, my 1500 point list uses the following:
2 Tactical Squads, each 10 men strong.
2 Tactical Squads, each 6 men strong.
An 8 man strong Assault Squad.
A Chaplain with a minimum of 4 Death Company
A Librarian/High Priest
There's some supporting armor, but the vast majority of it is power armored troops.
In one of my 1850 lists I have
29 tac marines broken up over 4 squads
20 assault marines
and 2 HQs
giving me 57 'regular' marines
and 7 heavy hitters (hq/termies)
This is the most "man heavy" list I play right now for the marines, but has stood me in good stead against nearly everything.

I'm definitely a fan of the more Marines the better off you'll be. I've got the following armies at the points listed, with the model count for Marines:
1500 point 13th Company (Space Wolves) = 50 Marines
2000 point Space Wolves Drop Pod list = 55 Marines
2200 point Shadow Hunter (Blood Angels Successor) = 71 Marines
1750 point Daemonhunter = 41 Grey Knights and 18 Inquisitorial Stormtroopers (59 Troopers)
