if i were to enter a competition then would i need a 2000p army? if not then what is the recommended mount of points an army should have?
You only have to get a 2,000pt army if you REALLY want to play with one.
Except if you're going to a 2000pt army tournament... Then you gotta if you want to play, it's elementary. Just do what you think you wanna do.
Post your army lists in the ARMY LIST section! Not that hard!
"The internet perceives censorship as damage, and routes around it."
you might want to shoot for a list around 1000 - 1500. Most tourneys are around 1500 to 1850 that I have played in.
Personally, I like to stay around 1000 so that it allows myself and others to play with what we have.
Yes, you SHOULD have a 2000 pt army if you enter a tournament. You could play with less, but you'll be at a major disadvantage.
Most people collect more points than they need for a tournament, so that they have options for writing army lists. Variety can help to keep your opponent on his toes.
However, ONE good 2000pt list might provide you with the ability to build multiple 1500 or 1000 point lists, but that depends on how diverse your 2000pt list is. If it's 2000pts of Marines, then 1000pts is still only going to have a bunch of Marines.
Also, what is common where you play? Our store will quickly tell you that most players play 2k of 40k, 3k of Fantasy, and 500 of LOTR. But that is OUR store and those are AVERAGE games. They of course go up and down quite often.
Alot of the rogue trader events are 1850, but most of the other tournies I've been too were 1500.
Take life seriously, its lethal.
If your store regularly runs tournaments that are 2k then buy enough guys to play 2k. My store runs one every 3 monthes. If you were playing at my store I would say buy 1k or 1500 and get good at it.
I hate seeing players buy stuff so fast they dont know how to do it. Correction I laugh at myself when I bought 2000 points of models, put it together in one night and lost all my battles for monthes because I didnt know how to use anything. I would start off playing 1000 points mostly troops and play a couple of games. Ask some veterans at this site or at your store what you should get next (or something you think is amazingly cool looking) and add it slowly. It feels pretty bad when you cannot remember how to play anything in your army and you panic and then loose the game.
If you build a man a fire he will be warm for a night. If you set a man on fire he will be warm the rest of his life.
my local gaming store runs almost exclusively 2000pt tournies, with one 1500 and one 1850 that i can think of, otherwise the tournies are 2k.
But for armies 2k is a good number, and the numbers will also help make versatile 1000-1500pt lists cuz of the excess models

Just do like your friends do.
If they have 2000 points armies, get 2000 points of stuff.
If only play 1000 points then get that much.
If want to play pick-up games, 1500-1850 is considered the norm.
Small games are usually considered 1000 points to 1500, 1500 -1850 is average, and anything over is a large game.
Even amounst avide gamers, rarely is more then 3000 points played with, just because it starts taking a long time to play out that many points worth of stuff.
Occationally monster games will be played, such as 4000 VS 4000, but this is usually, 2 armies teaming up, or 4 armies if youve got a lot of people.
