i was just woindering if mortars are a good choice. they only have adverage stregth and ap (s4,ap6). but the fact they can shoot behing cover, and cont cost much 80pts. in my army i have mainly hb and autocannons and i was wondering if it was worth it to use a mortar support squad. i havent heard anyone using them in their army, and i wa wondering what can they be good to use against?
I'm not an IG player myself (yet) but I believe the common verdict on mortars is that they're more for pinning things than actually killing stuff, especially since templates have to be centered on a model, and they're not overly strong, and have poor AP. If they achieve anything it's a bonus, but they can be good for annoying your opponent and getting him to send a unit after that 80 point unit.
Is that about right, real IG players?
Also most IG players to hide their command squads out of sight. Adding a mortar to the squad means they can keep shooting as opposed to any other weaponry.
Otherwise mortars aren't really that good.

Killing bugs, eldar guardians and other guardsmen. That being said, you are better off with any of the other heavy choices.

I've been addicted to World of Tanks lately and neglecting my IG... But it is so... much... fun!

mortars are insane when fighting orks. give all command plats a mortar, and all squads HB, its fun, tr it out!

As Lord Link Said, the only sensible use for mortars are if you are providing moral from a unit (Command HQ with master Vox) and you therefore need to stop it getting hit, the best thing is to put it out of sight, at which point all other weaponry becomes useless but a mortar team can still contribute to the war effort
Everything you have been told is a lie!
Cheradanine pretty well hit the nail on the head. I almost always put one in my command squad.
I don't find the Mortar squad that effect though. I would rather have a Heavy Bolter squad, even for hoards.
The only other use that I have found for a Mortar is an Infilatating or Deep striking squad to hold a table quarter etc, that baits the enemy to use his resourses or lose Victory points. This tactic is especially good in Cleanse games, or any game where table quarters are the objective. Infiltrate or drop a squad behind cover as far away from the enemy as you can. He will either waste a lot of time/resources to kill a cheap squad, or he will leave it.

Against Mech Tau with annoying suits that shoot and move mortars are decent- at least gives you a few extra chances of disrupting their jumping around. Might even pin down an unit for some lemen russ loving
I love them, not for their effectiveness but for them being so cool. It is a very "guardish" weapon I think, same as flamers. Not that they'll kill a lot (any?) but man when they do it really rocks.
I had some great luck with my Mortars in the last (and only) game I played with my guards.
It's a very fun weapon.
