ok, ok i keep getting lectured at how i should never take a hso b/c it's a "waste of points" but i take one in games as low as 750. is this wrong? if so why? and also if so, why does nobody like them?
one more question what's wrong with a radical dh army?(grey knights are not the be all and end all you know)
JOIN MY SQUAD IN THE SONS OF THE LIBRARIUM THREAD, I NEED TACTICAL MARINES! I PLAN TO CONVERT UP A SQUAD TO "COUNT AS" LoTD IN MY SMarine ARMY
For the first one, who lectures you? HSO's are the way to go, unless you aren't using the Honorifica Imperialis in your force, in which case you can save points by using a Junior Officer with it.
As for the second one, they are simply harder to use without Grey Knights - this can easily be bypassed with some inducted Space Marines or Imperial Guard, however.
There's nothing wrong with taking one. Its your army list, you can field whatever you want so long as its legali take one in games as low as 750. is this wrong? if so why? and also if so, why does nobody like them?
Sure, yes, I tend not to, as the x points I save can be used to give me another meltagun, or used to pump my sanctioned psyker, or in many other ways that I find more effective than simply giving my easily intant killed officer +1 wound and +1 Ld. I'd prefer to spend the difference on a standard bearer, in fact, seeing as the standard will on average make much more of a difference towards holding the line than +1 Ld ever will.
As for your last question , please refer to my first sentance.
"Pickles, the drummer, doodily doo. (Ding-dong, doodily, doodily, doo.)"
Also, you should google "garfield minus garfield". Awesome.
i never field Grey Knights. Everyone does, it seems, so I felt like making an army without any, just to be unique. Of course, all of my armys are a little... odd, so its not surprising I dont use them. Sure they look cool, and are pretty powerful, but since everyone uses them, everyone knows how to counter them (and when my Death-Cult assassins charge, people tend to panic.)

I play my 40k with friendly fire.
Finally fixed the link!
Like Lost Nemesis said, HSO's are definetally a solid choice. The "waste of points" your friends refer to is the fact that you can have a JO with the Honorifica Imperialis for 5 pts. less than you can have an HSO. They're the exact same model stat wise and all, but one is just 5 pts less. Not a major waste of points, but those 5 pts could go towards an extra plasma gun or something.
In bigger games, I just about always take an HSO and then save my Honorifica for somone else. A Junior Office in a troop command squad, Psyker, Techpriest are all choices that come to mind.

People like to talk **** a lot. Don't mind them. It's like this (IMO):
HSO= good for small/medium games (always banner his ass)
Commie w. JO= good for big games (1500 pts)(10 Ld is good+JO will spread it over 12") :w00t:
Damn those post traumatic, IG-fearing, nOOb-advice spamming MoFo's. They just want to get you down. The only think the IG lacks is melee and Ld, don't mind taking the Ld off!
unfortunaly, the JO's MW is only 8 and he can only 'spread' his own. however, he does get a +1 bonus for being bullied by the commie, but that's still 9, not 10. Unless you've forgotten to post that he has a honorifica imp..Commie w. JO= good for big games (1500 pts)(10 Ld is good+JO will spread it over 12")
to the topic:
i never use a HSO, but that's only the case because i use a JO with honorifica.
nevertheless, why not take a HSO? guard needs a good MW character (althoug i do not field a commie). Besides, the only 'wasted' HQ would be a SO, because he doesnt get the HSO MW and is not that much better than a JO. And if you want your HQ to do some fighting (which I dont), your better off with the HSO for sure.
I personally have never found the need for a HSO. I would maybe if I was using a Vox or wanting it for fluff. But I dont see the point... if you get to the point of using the 3 c/c attacks your probably going to die any way being that the Initative and Toughness are poor.
But that is just my army... and I could be very wrong and missing something.
