I'm starting either a Raven Guard or Mentor Legion army, and having tried out some colour schemes I'm now considering how I might represent Mentor Legion with traits.
For those that haven;t come across this varied Chapter, ML are a "new style" founding which is supposed to test new equipment and undertake specialist operations. Under the older fluff, they did organise themselves as an army but rather "loaned" squads which were attached to other Imperial campaigns. Now, it seems they've been demoted to the same organisation as most otehr chapters, but that's an interesting part of their background in any event.
Anyway, what traits best represent ML's background and fluff?
I thought about Scions of Mars (to represent the strong links with the Adeptus Mechanicus) and/or Honour Your Wargear. However, if I took both of those I'd have to take a Major Drawback, and none of those seem to be appropriate for the Mentor Legion. On the other hand, just taking a single trait would mean I could take Have Faith in Suspiscion. This I think is a particularly fluffy choice; the Mentor Legion was (conspiratorially) fledged from a Chapter called the Star Scorprions, which at some point in ancient history was lost in the Warp (and evntually the entire Chapter was decreed destroyed).
So, any ideas?
Hey Gorman: I posted the same thing on 40K Online but I see you're asking here as well...
Nothing to do with Traits, but right now I play SM Mentors, as per my Avatar... never again. I really regret my choice of armies for one simple reason... painting them is a giant pain!
1) White is a pain in the butt to paint.
2) 2 tone colour schemes are a pain too... and they take 2x as long!
Next time I do a Space Marine Army, 1 colour, no white. I would LOVE to be able to just spray paint the base colour, shade, highlight, detail, done.
When they are done, they look good and thats half the reason I chose them and they have good fluff. I'm a tech-head so they appeal to me. If you need the fluff just let me know.
IF, and thats a big IF, I do another SMarine army, I might do Blood Angels or Imperial Fists... even Ultramarines. As long as they only have 1 main colour!
I've always liked the Mentors, they have a very nice striking colour scheme, and some interesting fluff, as you mentioned
Traits wise, have you thought about 'cleanse and purify'? To me, having the choice between a special weapon and heavy, or two specials sounds like it might be right up the Mentor's street.
minus_t's painting log! Now with: More Wolves and Blue Robots!

Thanks for all the replies!
As for traits, I'm thinking about Scions of Mars more than any others now... The downside to that is I won;t get to make up a nice commander model though.
As for painting the Mentor Legion, I have done a few "tester" models of Raven Guard and Mentor Legion. It's tough, because I'm really pleased with both. But you're quite right about the dual colour scheme. I found that undercoating was the biggest problem - I went with white for all parts other than the body and backpack, which were black.
I went with a pretty simple way of painting them: did all the shading and what would be "blacklining" with Shadow Grey, then retouched the white. Then I went with Dark Angels green on the body, and gradually drybushed up to pure green (I use Vallejo colours mainly so not sure what the equivalent is in Citadel). The result is pretty stunning, but the white just needs constant touching up. Even finger prints from touching the black-coated body ended up causing problems...
I'll probably post a picture on the appropriate forum later this week.
