Ok, does a Chaplain HAVE to be black, a librarian HAVE to be blue and an apothecary HAVE to be white?
I note that the most recent SM codex has a UM apothecray painted in UM colour, rather than white, so my apothecary question is practically answered, but what of the other two?
Are they just blue and black to stand out from the rest of the army? What is the fluff regarding the blue librarians? And is it perfectly viable to paint my Dark Angels characters in Dark Angels green as opposed to the normal Black, White, Blue?
I can't say I've seen it all but I live for the things that keep me hollow.
You can paint your army in any way that you see fit. Paint them with pink and purple poka-dots if you want and nobody can deny you using them....just point and laugh at you.
It is your army paint it what ever the heck you want to paint it.
If you are looking to get a good comp/painting score in a tournament then you might want to reconsider painting your entire army pink. I would be irritated if someone did something like paint thier chaplin blue and thier librarian black, especialy if they didnt tell me right off. If you have a normal, say assault marine, representing your librarian or chaplain and do not paint him differently and dont at the begining hold him up and say this is a chaplain with a jump pack and whatever else, then I might even be pissed. This might get you a bad sportsmanship comp score
I use a Verteran marine (the breakie with a book) as a librarian. I paint him blue and added a pretty good representation of a force weapon and an iron halo. Most people say when I am abot to play, oh that is a librarian right.
So I would say if your guy does not really look like a librarian, apothocary, chaplain you might want to paint him the normal colors.
If you build a man a fire he will be warm for a night. If you set a man on fire he will be warm the rest of his life.
It's in Insignium Astartes, which is a sub-section of the Codex. So ideally you should.
I would enforce it if I could but unfortunatly don't have the power to do so, also Murder is illegal now.
Every time you read this sig: a fairie dies!
On the fluff side of things, the changes in colour for these units is due to the Codex Astartes. So if you were playing UM I'd say yes. However, with all the different chapter colours and organisations the part in the Codex Astartes about this isn't as important as, say, stopping your Librarians from going all chaosy. And the DA weren't ever really strict followers of the Codex Astartes. I would however, put some markings on to show that these models are who you say they are. If you really care about fluff just make something up about the armour they wear, or a battle they were in or their beliefs that means they have to wear the same colours as the rest of your chapter.
"DICE FOR THE DICE GOD!"
And the almighty Dice God said to his followers "Thou shalt not speak ye words "anything but a one" For thou whoever'st speaketh this blasphemy will be cursed with thy rolls being of one".
You could also just paint one shoulderpad and arm (and maybe the helmet) in the specialist marine color. I did that with some of my marines and it identifies them without making them stand out too much.
Shut up and play.
Hmm I didn't know the librarians were supposed to be blue, only about chapies being black. I recently painted a DA chaplain, and what I did was paint the armor black, but did the trim in the DA green. But he is also wearing one of the robes, so only arms and feet are showing anyway. But with a skull face and a modified crozius weapon he looks like a chaplain.
And don't forget about a book for the librarian, or even the chaplain for that matter. Will help to identify them.
wait....when were libbies always blue? I never heard anything like that.
Yes chaplains should be black...but the codex astartes is not followed so strictly. Just make him stand out.
mine looks like a normal marine in my army cept both of his shoulderpads are painted the secondary color instead of the right one only (just my colorscheme to make it stand out)...and he has all the veteran stuff. (helmet and kneepads are different color..etc.)
and he has a giant double edged spear with a sacred tapestry trailing from it...thats gotta mean something.

Well what i did is just paint my termie chappy just like the usual then make the left shoulder pad as my amry colour (Crimson Fist = Dark blue)
Well it is your chapter so do what you want with it ideally if you follow the codex astartes closely then chaplins should be black librarians blue Techmarnes scabred and apothacarys white. But you can always choose to do what i did and completely ignore that and paint them your chapter colours
